I just discovered a new (to me) channel on my satellite that has the old Smothers Brothers shows. Watching the first one and Tommy convinces Dick to “go electric”. I was astonished when I noticed that Dick was playing an 8-string (!) Hagstrom bass! Talk about being ahead of the curve. (At around 4:42 for that. Guild content in the beginning, of course.)

The Hagstrom 8-string bass was also used by Noel Redding, and Jimi Hendrix, most prominently on *Axis: Bold as Love*.

Redding was an endorser; Hendrix recorded some of the bass parts for that album.

Hah! I just watched that episode too! Musical guest were The Doors! I had a WTH is THAT? moment when I saw that bass.

It's on getTV which I can get over-the-air.

They're also running The Johnny Cash Show and the Glen Campbell Music Show.

"What am I gonna do with my old bass?"
I'd tell you - but you wouldn't do it!"

:highly_amused:

Keith Richards must be trembling somewhere . . .

A wall of Peavey sound columns stacked - not exactly wall of Mashalls.

Thanks for sharing this delightful video in times of toilet-roll-memes.

I might be wrong, but aren't they both playing Hagstroms? I have one of those Sweedish made Hagstrom 335 copies - nice guitar.

Technically Tommy ordered his D50 Specials as far back as '63 and it got the D55 model number in '68 when it became a special order-only model. Hans told us a story once about one of his guitars getting a shoe-polish sunburst in an emergency during a show, and seem to recall (but not positive) it was an actual D55 at that point.
Since the show lasted into June '69 it's not impossible for there to have been actual D55(s) on camera.

Let me be first to welcome you back. What do you think of what GAD's done with the place while you where gone?
Thanks "DThom".
My head exploded.
(yeah I saw that other thread :p )
I used to view the old forum a little differently than most, I had my settings set to show the last post in a thread at the top, saved having to scroll through the whole d--n thread to get to the last post and then could just scroll down a little bit to make sure I'd seen all posts.
I'm assuming for now I just haven't figured out how to do that yet but haven't posted a formal question over there yet.

That was great!! Love Tommy.

Looks like Marshall amps in the wings that they were actually plugged in to.

I know you'll figure it out. A couple of tips: simply click on the name of a thread and you'll be taken to the first unread post. No need to read them in reverse order. And, some people like to click on "Mark forums read" at the top of each page before they end a session. That way, when you come back, only posts that are new be in bold.

Nuuska, I am surprised at you! Those aren't Peavey's, those are Acoustic amplifiers...wonder if they were The Door's wall-of-sound that evening, as they used that brand...

I accepted the Peavy identification because the strips on the side of the cabinets said Peavey to me. But Acoustic does seem a better match. Note that there are Marshal heads (at least) about waist high on both sides of teh stage. I wonder if those are what is actually being used?

Thanks. Had not heard that before. Definitely not the usual lip synch to the hit single that passes for TV performances of that era. Interesting stuff going on in the bass - Manzarek is looser than usual. I also note Manzarek conducting the horns at one point.
