This is a body style I really hadn't had experience with until I started dealing with Saga. Now I've had several through my hands of various manufacturers, new & vintage. So far, I can't say I've found a dud, even down to my entry level Durango (which is all mahogany). The design seems to pack a powerful punch, regardless of wood combinations. You can bet I'll be adding one to my personal arsenal soon.

I know Fender has one or two in their catalog, but do you suppose they would ever consider a Guild sloped d? I'd love to see one!

Not sure I would love to "see" one, Don. I never found them aesthetically pleasing. But I gotta agree, the few I've played (in stores) sounded wonderful! Which ones come from Saga?

My first thoughts were similar Mark. Thought they looked a little off, but they've definitely grown on me. I never used to care much for the florentine cutaway either until I started paying attention to the Starfires.

Anyway, through Saga there are 7 different sizes, wood combinations available in this "pre-war" design. 4 from Blueridge & 3 from Durango. I have 3 here now & the cheapie all mahogany Durango is sitting out on a stand easily accessible.

Here's one of the Blueridge I have with Brazilian back & sides.

I have elsewhere stated that the D-55 was the first square shoulder dreadnought to capture my attention, but I have been a huge fan of the slope dreads for a long time. Specifically, the short scale Gibson J-45 and J-50 models which I consider the to be the standard bearers.

Maybe more appropriate for the "let's not talk Guild" thread... my most charming '61 J-50 and my '06 best friend:

The week before last I bought this 2000 Santa Cruz Vintage Southerner on eBay. Frankly it went so low my goal was to flip it (aided by the fact that it was listed in eBay Motors and the auction closed at 2:30 AM) , but a funny thing has happened in the week since the big brown truck came around, it is really growing on me. Inspired by the J-45, and very similar in style to the Epiphone Texan that I learned to play on, the guitar goes a step further with a short scale and scalloped bracing creating a deep warm sound in the lows and clear highs. The short scale makes it a little easier than others to fret, and you can bend the heck out of the strings without hurting fingers or affecting tuning. It is light as a feather, and the burst is a thing of beauty. I guess it will be staying in the collection for a while -- question now is what do I sell to pay for it?
