Selling a D55--looking for advice

I've been putting off writing this message. I'm not exactly thrilled about selling this guitar, but it has to happen. I know you guys are going to try to convince me to keep it. :)

Well, I'll just get right into it. What kind of price would you guys expect a 2000 (or maybe 2001) Westerly, natural finish, no electronics, Guild D55 to fetch? Original case. The only modifications are ebony bridge pins (originals in case) and a bone (or maybe tusq) nut and saddle. Action is almost too low, but it doesn't buzz. Probably could use a setup.

If you were going to sell this instrument, how would you go about it? eBay? And, again, what kind of money can I expect to get from it?

I don't know if I want to tell you guys why I'm selling it. You'll shun me. :(

The truth is that I am a longtime Guild player. I've owned maybe five or six of them!

List:
1997 DCE1 (my first good guitar, purchased late 1999 I think)
The D55 in question (purchased in 2001)
F30R (awesome little guitar--loved the short scale--sold it, regretted selling it... am over it... unsure on date)
1980s Mahogany/spruce dread (beaten up--not by me!--but fantastic guitar)--not a D25 I don't think! 2005
Chinese 2007 mahogany/spruce jumbo
old (1970s? 60s) nylon string--Mark I probably 2008

All right. Well, a little bit about my D55, and then you guys can JUDGE, JUDGE, JUDGE me. Keep in mind I am STILL a Guild lover, regardless of how it might seem.

Got it at Mandolin Bros. in 2001 (August), shipped it home to myself. Paid $1600 I believe (still have the receipt), or maybe $1700.

I played it a ton when I first got it, but I was always really scared to take it out of the house, so I kept gigging with my DCE1 for the most part (or whatever else I may have been using then--can't remember, truthfully!). In 2005 or so, when I found out I was moving to Hawai'i for school (trust me, not as fancy as it sounds--was there for 1.5 years), I freaked out. I knew I couldn't take my Guild with me. What if something happened to it?

I randomly was able to raise the money for, and got a great deal on, a Composite Acoustics Legacy guitar (vintage tailored). Go ahead, judge judge. I totally adore the thing. I've been using it as my main guitar ever since. Indestructible, sounds great, plays like a dream. And thus, my poor Guild has sat almost entirely unplayed ever since.

I feel guilty as hell. I actually feel less guilty selling it than I do with it sitting and not getting played. I used to dream at night about my D55 sitting alone in the basement. I am not joking. It's bothered me for years.

Meh. :(

Anyway. So, give me some advice and some sympathy or something, will ya? I can post a few pics, but it generally looks the same as other D55s (always secretly wanted cherry or tobacco burst). I noticed that the new Tacoma ones sell for a TON $$$$$, so I'm hoping I can get back what I paid for mine, maybe even more, or is that a pipe dream?

Oh, and secondarily, if anyone among you Guild lovers were interested in buying it, even if I got less for it, I'd certainly rather have it in the hands of someone who would love, appreciate and play the thing. Carefully, but not as cowardly as myself.

Feel like I'm giving my dog up for adoption, but keeping it really isn't an option. I need the money, and I simply don't play it anymore. Even if I didn't absolutely need the money, I think it's time for it to move on to someone else. I'm breaking up with her.

Sorry for the somber/cranky/whatever tone of the post. See immediately preceding paragraph for the reasoning behind said tone.

Oh, PS, it's a great guitar. (Sure does need new strings tho.)

And, finally, to add insult to injury (please don't hate me), when I do buy another guitar again someday, it's going to be another carbon fiber guitar--a Composite Acoustics baritone or one of their 12-stringers. I want both eventually. I practically own stock in the company. I wish I could marry one of the owners' daughters. Please don't hate me!

 Don't! But if you do, I'd try and sell her here, you might get $1600 or so, but with eBay, you'll pay a listing fee, PayPal etc. You'd probablty have to get $1700 on eBay, and here, you could sort of keep her in the family. BTW, I posted a green Guild for you on the other thread. Here it is again.

That is a bummer! If I can't play it out using normal care & common sense, it has no business in my life.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks, you guys. Yeah, I would much rather sell it here. Like you said, keep it in the family. I'd be completely happy with $1600 if I could sell it here. Maybe even keep in touch with the new owner. HAHA my Lord, this really is like giving up a dog for adoption!

No, it is not. Shh. I need to stop thinking like that. This is just a guitar, not a person.

West, I see you have a 2001 D55! Is yours Corona or Westerly? Just curious. Maybe just salt in the wound at this point, but how do you like her? :) What color finish? I'd love to visit your collection. If we lived nearby, I'd ask if I could take you and the Mrs. out for dinner and then come play your guitars. :) ha!

The F65CE is GORGEOUS. That's that exact, perfect green. Why do I love it so much?? No one does that color like Guild. It's so stupid to say, but if this guitar had been green... :)

I played a Rainsong WS1000 composite last week at a store. I was totally amazed at how much it sounded like a wood guitar. I could definitely own one of those.

I played two CA's also, the Gxi model with the sound hole in the upper bass bout. Sounded nice, with a lot of bass (boardering on too much for my taste), but to me they had their own unique sound. Didn't sound like a wood guitar to me. Not a bad sound or a bad thing, just different.

I've actually had 2 D55's. The older one had a natural top and an elderly man I play with sometimes really wanted it, by that time I had gotten the D55 I now have. It's one of the very last to come from the Westerly factory in sunburst. It's the guitar in my avatar.

Glad you liked the green F65......go for it.

I probed around for you. The green F65CE seller will willingly let it go for a best offer of 900 bucks, no less.

Make an offer if it seems reasonable to you. I would go for it (and I was a few weeks ago) until I bought a different F65CE.

Hee hee, I'll let this one pass, I think. Do love the color, though. And your D55 is beautiful! Really do love those sunburst ones.

Yeah, the GXi's are really bassy! The GXes are a bit more balance.

You know, to me, the CAs I've played have sounded a lot more like wood, and the Rainsongs I've played have sounded less so. It's been a long time since I've played a Rainsong, though, and even when I did, I was quite impressed. I remember liking their jumbo.

Oops, missed this one!

Hee hee, I really can't. Do love the color! But I'm trying to thin the herd at this point, not expand it. Cool guitar, though.

Well, after exploring my options, I've pretty much decided the best thing to do would be to try to sell it to somebody on here. I don't think I want to consign it to anyone or use eBay or any of that.

Just thought I'd let you guys know. :) So I'm going to try to get that going this weekend.

Okay, so $1600 might be a bit much to ask. I might want to drop it down to $1400. Bit of a "discount" to encourage someone from here to buy it and save the guitar from eBay/consignment.

Thanks for the info. I'm not very up on current pricing!

Done and done! :)

Thanks again for the sympathy and advice, guys. One of the nice side-effects of wanting to sell is that I found this place, and now I can yack about Guilds all I wanna! As long as I can control the GAS.

I've never failed to sell an instrument on Craigslist. You can keep the ad local (avoid shipping), get paid in cash, and there's no fee.

Yeah, maybe that would be a little better than eBay... If I can't sell it here, I'll try that! Not sure if people in my area are really going to be interested, though.

Hey Jesse...the price seems pretty fair. My only advice would be to get some polish, and shine that baby up. Give the fretboard a good cleaning also. Even slap some new strings on it, and trim off the excess. Nice guitar in what looks like pretty good shape, but lots of competition out there for a discretionary purchase. Maybe a couple of back and front pics outside in some brighter natural light. I would even wipe any dust off the case.

Nice D-55...Good luck on your sale!!

Oh Man - got GAS bad this this baby. Floated up a trial balloon with significant other - and ya'll might guess how that went. NOT so good. :( Apparantly I do not have enough points in the spouse bank at the moment. How many times does a man need to take out the garbage for gods sake :!: Perhaps if I hid my D6 in the basement she might not notice that third guitar in the house. Then again a doberman might not notice if there was a steak on the floor.

My advice - please hide the damn thing so I can quit yearning for it.

Hee hee, okay, I might have to try that. Yes, it is rather dirty, particularly the case. Great condition, though! You don't like the strings wound like that? :) An old Chicago blues musician my dad met used to do that, swore it made the strings last longer and sound better. I don't know if there's truth to it, but Dad adopted the quirk, and I adopted it from Dad. Would love to meet that old guy someday, but I'm sure he's been dead for a while. Well, I'll jam with him eventually at any rate. He played an old Guild 12-string jumbo, according to Dad, and man could he make it sing.

Haha, thanks, Tunes! I wish you really *could* buy it. It sounds like you'd give her a great home! Under normal circumstances, I'd consider wheeling and dealing with you (like trades or what not), as my own GAS is notorious, but these days the only option is an outright sell. Might even have to sell one more of my guits after this one.

It'll be okay, though. Someday when I'm making a bit more cash........ :)
