I've been putting off writing this message. I'm not exactly thrilled about selling this guitar, but it has to happen. I know you guys are going to try to convince me to keep it.
Well, I'll just get right into it. What kind of price would you guys expect a 2000 (or maybe 2001) Westerly, natural finish, no electronics, Guild D55 to fetch? Original case. The only modifications are ebony bridge pins (originals in case) and a bone (or maybe tusq) nut and saddle. Action is almost too low, but it doesn't buzz. Probably could use a setup.
If you were going to sell this instrument, how would you go about it? eBay? And, again, what kind of money can I expect to get from it?
I don't know if I want to tell you guys why I'm selling it. You'll shun me.
The truth is that I am a longtime Guild player. I've owned maybe five or six of them!
List:
1997 DCE1 (my first good guitar, purchased late 1999 I think)
The D55 in question (purchased in 2001)
F30R (awesome little guitar--loved the short scale--sold it, regretted selling it... am over it... unsure on date)
1980s Mahogany/spruce dread (beaten up--not by me!--but fantastic guitar)--not a D25 I don't think! 2005
Chinese 2007 mahogany/spruce jumbo
old (1970s? 60s) nylon string--Mark I probably 2008
All right. Well, a little bit about my D55, and then you guys can JUDGE, JUDGE, JUDGE me. Keep in mind I am STILL a Guild lover, regardless of how it might seem.
Got it at Mandolin Bros. in 2001 (August), shipped it home to myself. Paid $1600 I believe (still have the receipt), or maybe $1700.
I played it a ton when I first got it, but I was always really scared to take it out of the house, so I kept gigging with my DCE1 for the most part (or whatever else I may have been using then--can't remember, truthfully!). In 2005 or so, when I found out I was moving to Hawai'i for school (trust me, not as fancy as it sounds--was there for 1.5 years), I freaked out. I knew I couldn't take my Guild with me. What if something happened to it?
I randomly was able to raise the money for, and got a great deal on, a Composite Acoustics Legacy guitar (vintage tailored). Go ahead, judge judge. I totally adore the thing. I've been using it as my main guitar ever since. Indestructible, sounds great, plays like a dream. And thus, my poor Guild has sat almost entirely unplayed ever since.
I feel guilty as hell. I actually feel less guilty selling it than I do with it sitting and not getting played. I used to dream at night about my D55 sitting alone in the basement. I am not joking. It's bothered me for years.
Meh.
Anyway. So, give me some advice and some sympathy or something, will ya? I can post a few pics, but it generally looks the same as other D55s (always secretly wanted cherry or tobacco burst). I noticed that the new Tacoma ones sell for a TON $$$$$, so I'm hoping I can get back what I paid for mine, maybe even more, or is that a pipe dream?
Oh, and secondarily, if anyone among you Guild lovers were interested in buying it, even if I got less for it, I'd certainly rather have it in the hands of someone who would love, appreciate and play the thing. Carefully, but not as cowardly as myself.
Feel like I'm giving my dog up for adoption, but keeping it really isn't an option. I need the money, and I simply don't play it anymore. Even if I didn't absolutely need the money, I think it's time for it to move on to someone else. I'm breaking up with her.
Sorry for the somber/cranky/whatever tone of the post. See immediately preceding paragraph for the reasoning behind said tone.
Oh, PS, it's a great guitar. (Sure does need new strings tho.)
And, finally, to add insult to injury (please don't hate me), when I do buy another guitar again someday, it's going to be another carbon fiber guitar--a Composite Acoustics baritone or one of their 12-stringers. I want both eventually. I practically own stock in the company. I wish I could marry one of the owners' daughters. Please don't hate me!
