I was helping my MIL and her mom clean out the garage and saw a guitar headstock poking out from under some stuff on the top of a shelf and it turned out to be this awesome 60’s Teisco Del Rey! And now she is MINE. Need to give her a much needed spa day(s) and test her out but what a find for free.

Cool! My first guitar was a sunburst Teisco electric my mom bought at Kmart in the early 70s, back when they carried guitars in the store!

I'm not much on electrics, but I've read that there's an almost fanatic following for some of those "pre-clone" Japanese guitars and pickups!

I’m the same way. Almost exclusively acoustics for me. My luthier buddy did tell me that the pickups in these are amazing. Also said the tone gets even better if you simplify the overly complex wiring.

Congratulations! Looking forward to pics after her spa day.

Who in the family would have had an (abandoned) interest in guitar?

My wife’s grandfather ran a bar for years and my mother in law thinks it was from someone settling a bar tab. He ended up with all kinds of stuff that way.

Congratulations! Very cool! In "History of Japanese Electric Guitars"- Frank Myers wrote this and another Teisco pickup are "perhaps the most famous of all the Teisco pickups".

The model of the guitar is the TG-64, actually the 4th version of it. She might be from around 1967/1968 in that version. EDIT: Maybe a bit earlier like 66/67.
The four by two tuner configuration is really interesting on all of them. The back of the guitar and neck are painted black I believe?

The tremolo and arm looked like this:

Congratulations! That’s what you get for helping your MIL! My buddy had one of those when we were in High School; so I have fond memories of those. Very cool find, a little set up work, and you should have a great player.

Yeah, I would. I had a serious hankering for a Gem, but stuck with more traditional guitars.

Nice pic. Interesting how the headstock graphics mimic a futuristic pointy headstock as well.

I have a similar era Teisco, and golly gee, the build quality and tone are both outstanding.

This is mine, same inlays. The fingerboard is rough, not much for bending, but the tone with a wound G Monel set, for open tuning slide, wow, nothing else in my very large arsenal like it, also worthy of mention is better higher register access for slide than a Strat even.
