I just noticed a difference in Schaller M6 tuners that I found in my parts bin. Note the shape of the tunnel boss leading to the button. One is round (conical) and the other is 4-sided (trapezoidal). I'm not sure if this difference can be used to date them, but you know... minutia is fun.

The lower/right one (round) seems to be the older 70ies or 80ies version and the top/left one (trapezoid) a newer version.

Guild got a better financial deal on round metal stock than on trapezoidal shaped metal stock - both quality stock.
Profit drives financial decisions when same quality material is used.

Good try but pretty sure those are not machined from round or tarapezoidal stock. I would think they are cast.

Shadows and reflections not playing tricks on our eyes with round vs trapezoidal are they? I have my 1983 Hank Jr. G45 sitting next to the piano and had to take a close-up look at at the tuners. I think they might be trapezoidal but I wouldn't put much of a wager on it.

I think you're right. I checked a guitar I have that was built in 2008 and it has the trapezoid style M6 tuners.
