When I think of sapele wood on guitars I assume it will be of the striped variety. However, sapele also comes quilted and is sometimes called pomelle sapele. I doubt Guild will ever use it (for a GSR model), but here's an example.

That's too much for my taste...But yes, there is some great figured sapele.

Also interesting to know: "While standard sapele is normally quartersawn, which contributes to its overall stiffness, quilted sapele is often flatsawn. This not only allows the beautiful figure to be showcased to maximum effect, it also produces more flex in the wood. This translates tonally into slightly more power and warmth than standard sapele, which typically has a mahogany-like tone with a more pronounced treble zing."

That's a Shar Pei in wood form.

Seriously, that really is some incredibly dense quilting. I have seen some real mahogany from "the tree" that looks similar, but of course quilted mahogany is extremely rare. This sapele is also fairly darkly stained to bring out the quilt. Wow!

Lovely reminder of my youth - many guitars had blonde tops and red sides & back & neck.

Thats crazy looking, almost can see it moving if you look too closely!, lol. I do like the contrast in coloring though between the neck and the sides. Some guitars are just fine examples of when art meets art.

What a shame!
Such beautiful wood on such an ugly looking instrument.
If Picasso designed a guitar, this is what it would look like.
Feh!

Maybe Dali was inspiration ? You take a fresh baked guitar - and before it is not quite dry yet - you set it on it's bass-string-side down. Then you wait until cutaway, soundhole & bridge have guttered to their new locations / forms . 😂
