My 512 has the tuners that you clip the end and insert it in a hole at the bottom of the post rather than the ones with the hole through the tuner. Wondering if it's possible to use round wound strings without having to use the whole length, resulting in tons of windings around the post.

I have a telecaster with tuners like that. Here's what I do: I take the string and eyeball about 3 extra tuner lengths past the tuning machine I will put the string on and clip it. This results in about 3 wraps around the tuner post when finished. The only strings that might cause you an issue if you clip them are round core strings since they might unravel the windings.

I guess I should have been clearer, it's round core, not round wound that I was wondering about. Not had any problem with non round core strings.

In that case, I believe the idea is to put a 90 degree kink in the string with pliers or something and cut it right past the bend to lock the windings in place.

I believe that's also the way to install round-cores on slot-head tuners too.
