Rory Gallagher 's always been one of my favourite players, besides being an incredible guitarist He was a very sweet guy, funny on stage and gentle and approachable off stage.
I met him after an Italian concert at the Pistoia Blues Festival in 1984, I was just a kid with a vinyl album copy of LIVE IN EUROPE for him to sign ,but He took time to ask me if I played and what I liked in his music ....
He left such a great legacy of classic beautiful albums ( the first Rory Gallagher from 1970, Deuce from 1971, Calling Card from 1976 just to name a few,but almost everything he recorded was astonishingly good with fantastic songs and different playing styles), but when you saw him live He really seemed to come from a different planet. There are many posts covering every era of his carreer on You Tube, but if you want a transcendental experience just treat yourselves with some DVDs: the classic IRISH TOUR ,from the 1973 tour, or the boxsets LIVE IN MONTREUX (2 DVDS with 5 hours of concerts,1975-1994), or ROCKPALAST ( 3 DVDs 10 hours of concerts 1976-1991, fantastic stuff, the best one being a 1 hour TV acoustic solo concert ,just a 1932 National Resonator guitar, a Martin D35 and Rory singing the blues .

I 've never been a great fan of the Stratocaster, I recognize its beauty, sound , genial design and importance in R'n'R, but personally it's not a guitar I crave to buy, despite this when I see it and hear it in the hands of Rory I ADORE IT, it's just a perfect sound...the way He plays slide parts on it it's unbelievable.
Listen carefully also to the acoustic songs and technique of Rory, it's a lesson in taste and feeling ,and what beautiful melodies and voice too.

I listen constantly to his music and some times there are days in which it's the only music I listen to, a very fullfilling experience.

For those who don't know him my advice is to start with the album IRISH TOUR ,with the integral performances of many songs you find on the DVD with the same title. This is surely one of the best LIVE albums ever, period. Listen to "A Million Miles Away" and marvel....

Why is He not generally listed in the top 10 of the best rock guitarists ever?
This is a mistery and a shame!!!
