Went through a major bluegrass phase during the mid to late '70s. Along with Bill Monroe & others, I was fortunate enough to see Ralph on tour during that era. My favorite bluegrass recordings though, were by Reno & Smiley - both for Reno's playing & Smiley's singing.

Ralph Stanley was the face of the distinctive "High Mountain Tenor" vocals. His stage presence was crisp and professional. He assured that his band followed the Bluegrass Gentleman Code of Honor with tight, well rehearsed sets of exceptional Bluegrass music.

Rolling Stone has collected some excellent video clips from his career.

There is no replacing him as he was cut from cloth that is no longer made.
