He was a mad genius. Can't have a Dumble thread without this bit of magnificent history:

SO many of the current pile of boutique amps are based on his designs. I've wanted a Two Rock forever. The stories I've read of his antics are legendary.

I once could try a 80s dumble overdrive combo with 12“ ev. Magnificent tone. This was the reason why I had an experienced ampbuilder make me a dumble inspired custom amp. A true legend.

"King of Amplification" is a little over the top, isn't it? Funny phenomenon, the Dumble thing. He's responsible for amps a lot of people who've never been near to one really think they want.

I've played some clones and Dumble-inspired amps and I can safely say they're not for me.

Dumbleheads are in a trance, brought about by hearing notes that cost $1000 a piece ;]

At the request of a friend of mine, I bought a killer 335 and a Fuchs Overdrive Special from a friend of his who needed the money but couldn't afford the stuff, gave me a crack at it. The Fuchs was supposed to be a lot like a Dumble, in the way that you lose all objectivity about the sound, and at the amp's price point, it has to sound great.

Interestingly, I had it on eBay and it went to Norway or similar, wherever they say Tak ;]

I was always up for a crazy shipping job.

I had the Fuchs apart, and the uber space age build really turned me off, and it didn't sound good to me after that, and besides, honestly, lofi amps complement my sh*tty guitar playing just fine, I don't really need to hear how bad I sound with something as clear as a Dumble or a Fuchs.

Show me some old time PTP, carbon comp resistors and old tubes and I'll make it sound good in my own head ;]

Leo Fender/and crew is probably the influential ampmaker of our lifetimes. Even if he had only invented the Champ, he would indubitably be "The King of Amplification" for all time.

PS There are a lot of Dumble pedals for those who will never get near an actual amp, and a few pedals like the Klon Centaur and the Hermida Audio Zendrive have a direct association with the Dumble by way of Robben Ford and others, therefore the pedals are subject to insane hype/prices and it wouldn't surprise me if you found someone selling an early Centaur for $5000.

None of this is a slam on HAD, I'd love to just be in the room with a Dumble amp one time, but probably never happen.

Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
