Hi folks,

Anyone have one of these dogs? I'm considering an adoption, but I don't know anyone who's ever had one. They sound like wonderful hounds... Love to hear some 1st-hand stories, good or bad... Thanks in advance.

I've never owned one nor has anyone I personally know, but having been a dog lover in general my whole life, and from everything I've heard about the breed, they do require unique attention from a pup on. (as do many specific breeds). So personally, I would be more willing to adopt if it's a pup...and be more cautious/hesitant if it is an adult dog. There are just certain breeds that if not properly trained by the time they are 2-3 yrs old, can be a constant pain in the @$$ and leave a trail of mischief and damage behind them. Dalmatians, Chesapeake Retrievers, Rhodesians, and several others are known to be like this. The older they are, the harder it will be to break them of bad behavior.

just my 2 cents. (absolutely gorgeous dogs nonetheless. (y) )

Agreed. These are dogs that can be very protective and if memory serves very headstrong. Proceed with caution. If its been well raised and there are no other dogs involved it could be great. As you’ve no doubt seen me say before, you get what you get with rescues and sometimes that can be a challenge. First rule is to find out why he was given up.

I knew someone who got an adult Rhodesian and had a lot of problems with the dog, but I don't know whether he had ever had a dog before so could have been a poor match.

Are you considering a adult? Male or female?

I know two people who have RR's (one also show/bred them). Let me make inquiries...

The ones I've known have all been great dogs, but like most large working dogs they need a lot of exercise. If you're willing to put the time in, he'll probably be fine. Hopefully he's crate trained.

Very familiar with these dogs. We had 7 on the farm when I was a child. ( Outside of Bulawayo)Extremely protective, head strong, and tend to form attachments for a long length of time. Read about them. Particularly what they were raised and bred for. They are a working dog.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. My lead on the dog seems to have fizzled. I don't know, she hasn't responded to me after our initial conversation when she told me that someone was coming to have a look at the dog on Monday. I'm assuming it's gone (although a call back on status would've been nice).

Anyway, unless she gets back to me, it's unlikely there will be another one of these up for adoption soon. I have put my application in to a golden rescue place close to me... We'll see.

You have no right to expect better customer service than what some folks get from Guild.

Not yet, GG. I'm waiting to see if this is likely to happen or not. Thanks for the lead though. I surely will.
