I recently purchased an over the counter replacement saddle for my 12 string. When I go to use it, I see that one end of the saddle is higher (taller) than the other. Is there a reason for this? If so, which end goes where? Is this just a defective part?

Welcome to the forum, big. :D

The taller end goes under the bass strings. Because they are larger in diameter, the bass strings must be held higher above the fretboard.

Big, Welcome to the forum.
Now you have asked the question, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride :) .
If you are contemplating fitting this new saddle can we suggest that you do a little homework and learn as much as you can before you fit it? You will have to adjust it unless you are unbeliveably lucky. You don't just buy them ready to fit even though the saddle you have is already set for treble and bass height. Every guitar is different and to get the best string height and playability for your style you will need to set-up the guitar which could mean nut, saddle and trussrod adjustment at least. Have you got a copy of Guitar Player Repair Guide by Dan Elrwine? A book like this is a good reference and gives a good idea of how to do most things to a guitar and even if you get a luthier to do the work you will at least know what he/she is doing and why.
Best of luck, Steve.

thank you both...the book sounds helpful as I have many other questions...meanwhile I plan to set the string height by slipping a feeler gauge between the first fret and E strings and reducing the nut and/or saddle with a sander...the Guild site provides recommended parameters...thanks again
