first I must say this board and it’s wonderful members have been a welcomed distraction during this bad movie we’re all living in...I hope everyone stays safe until this passes.

the down time has given me opportunity to record and refine some of my music. I need to keep things simple, so I’m using GarageBand on my iPhone, recording directly into the phone mic, and overdubbing the same way. interestingly enough I’ve found that my 15 year old Yamaha beater gives me the sound I’m seeking...my d50 records itself sounding too much like a well balanced, fully opened guitar. the Yamaha gives me more of that early Beatles acoustic sound. I’ve been duplicating the first track, dialing down its presence and adding a bit of delay or reverb, making for a very clear, but full or fat track. mind you I’m a novice and really don’t know what the hell im doing, just experimenting and killing time. I then take the finished tracks, Dropbox them off to my son in Chicago (I’m near Boston) and he adds the bass, percussion, and any other guitars he deems fit, and does the final mix in Protools.

please share your recording efforts during this time of isolation. best wishes to all. once I get some final songs back I’ll share.

Not directly related but I typically don't record. But I had a chance to sing in a virtual choir and (at the time) they were lacking in tenors so I gave it a shot. I tried recording (which included video) on my laptop. The attempt failed because, softwarewise, I made things harder than they needed to be, but I found that the mic was real good at picking up extra noise - sheet music pages turning, a car horn outside at least a block away through closed windows and so on. Tried the phone and had similar results in terms of ambient noise but the mechanics were easier so I went with it. If I try again I'd like a directional mike. I think there is an old Shure in the house from the days when a wannabe band member would bring all their own equipment. I can spend way too much time looking for an adapter from a 1/4" phone jack to a mini-jack or maybe just plug it into an amp and use one of the amp's outputs. Regardless your project sounds like fun.

A month ago I did some recording here. (a dumb/catchy pop song called "In a Daydream") First I've done other than recording live jams in a couple years. Then I had a buddy over to add some harmonica and backing vocals.

This gave me a chance to knock some of the rust off of my recording skills. I still use SONAR X3. Since I still know only about 1/4 of the software's capabilities and features there's been no need to upgrade.

But as the coronavirus thing fully kicked in I've not done any more. Problem is I don't have a bass here. So after getting my tax refund I bought another bass on Reverb, but am still waiting for that to arrive. I expect to get into some more recording after that, but who knows what the future will bring right now.

Sounds like a plan! Keep at it. Overdubbing and adding tracks is just such fun! I've been playing around with it for decades, and when software came out to turn your computer into a recording studio, that was heavenly! I've gotten a bit more minimalist lately, but here's an old 12-bar blues piece I put together back when mp3.com used to pay for "listens." I'm currently using a Scarlett 2i2 into cubase elements, mostly the Motif direct into the Scarlett...

"And I prove it every time I record myself. "

Which is why I have only done it twice in my life. Once, here for a guitar sound demo.
