I also have an Epiphone EJ-200 and it's a great fun guitar but don't be mistaken into thinking that's how all maple jumbo guitars sound. I bought a Gibson SJ-200 just 3 months ago and the difference between them is huge.

A new Guild F-55M was my very close 2nd choice.

Toward the top of the first page of this thread is a nice summary from LTG'er Ralf (aka SFIV1967) of the when and where of Guild guitars:

I have a Tacoma F-47R and it is wonderful.

Wow
Awesome
Thanks man!

And I do think I'm narrowing it down to a f40 or a f47r at this point. I saw a post on here by Hans Moust with this same photo saying it was a 70s era f40... I love the sound of rosewood though.
Either way seems I might have to raise the price bar up a bit if chasing one of those 2 😬

This sites awesome.

Thanks again!

Welcome to LTG! Already mentioned a lot (here in the great New Hartford made version when Guild was still FMIC owned):

...remembering seeing/hearing a few other artists actually playing a Guild that made me really start to commit to getting a Guild.
Definitely log into LTG and click through the 49 pages of Artists who played or are still playing Guild guitars! More than a few!

How are they? They should be good made in Germany.
I have no experience with them as I have no guitars with them and also never played one with them. But I'm sure some members here have them. From the pure look of them they look solid to me, so yes, probably pretty good. Kolb as a manufacturer in Bavaria (they were in Bubenreuth) does not exist anymore. They closed shop many years ago I read.
As far as I remember they came out around 1968 on Starfires and were used on multiple models in slightly different versions. Hans said before "Kolb used several similar but different bushings over the years. "

O.k., end of veer, back to topic !

Hey!
You saved me a lot of research with your other post on dates/factories in that other thread LTG'er gjmalcyon pointed me to.
Thanks for that 🙂

This video just further sells me on the f47r
That is a sweet guitar...

I'll take a look at the artist list.
I dont doubt there are a lot.
I just meant after seeing that photo of Linda Ronstadt, I started thinking about artists I know I've seen with a Guild. Then I started spotting more hah! Will check out that list.

Thanks Ralf!

Ok, it’s a dread but looks really nice, especially for over 45 years old.

If I was looking for a dread I might make an offer on this. Super clean looking and prob aged well. Ive got a tacoma and martin dread already though and really thinking a concert body or orchestra at this point.
Thanks tho 🙂
Thats a good looking guitar

Original poster: A decade ago you tried out a bunch of guitars, and I would say that is still the best way to find what will please hands/ears/wallet. You already have a kind of design/performance envelope in mind, but it's a big one. And there's no guarantee that a given guitar that fits it will turn out to be the one that says, "Buy me."

In more than a half-century of trying and buying instruments, I've been surprised more times than I can count. I once thought that big rosewood guitars (Guild D-50s, Martin D-28s) were too boomy, but my current go-to is a rosewood Goodall Standard. I thought that rosewood was optimal for smaller guitars--but another of my favorites is an old Martin 0-18. Go figure.

There are too many variables operating in a guitar's design, materials, and construction formula to make generalizations reliable. Your materials/design envelope is a starting place, but be prepared to be surprised.

I made an offer of 1,000 and he turned me down. That's a good thing, I Don't need anymore guitars.

My gut says you're right.
My impatience to wait until covids over argues.
But my memory confirms what you're saying.
I've bought 2 guitars online in the past (both new) based on specs and they both underdelivered once in my hands. Looking back I think yeah, if I had picked those up in a store and played them, I honestly think I would've passed on them both.

The only possible way around it that I can think of (with an acoustic) is if I hear a guitar on a record and I want that sound. But even then if I could identify the exact model, if it's not pure unplugged version I guess there's always the EQ'ing and everything that's going on if its plugged in, or any sound engineering that happened between the guitar and my headphones.

I've heard a guy playing a guitar that Sheryl Crow used on tour that he somehow worked his way into buying for God knows what - and it had the same sound.
But finding a guitar used on a Linda Ronstadt or Carole King record or another off of my list that was actually played on the record would be hard enough. I imagine obtaining it without breaking the bank would be pretty hard too hah.

Maybe the way to go is finding the era, model, specs, etc - narrow it down that way - then search them out and play them in person like you're saying.

I'm starting to think I need to stop buying a bunch of 800 to 1500 guitars and just find the one or two that are perfect to my ears.

I was pretty sold on the f47r, but you're making me want to go play one in person first.
Long story long - advice taken.
