I want to replace the neck pickup in my tele. I've currently got a fralin P92 in there. Kind of a mix between a humbucker and a P90 (is how I would describe it). It sounds good but -- I want something sweeter and cleaner, more pristine. (I think). What I've got is too gritty and occasionally quacky.

I've lately been playing DeArmond Goldtones, Guild HB1s, and DeArmond 2000s. I can imagine those might sound good in there. Has anyone ever heard a tele with one of those pickups in the neck? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks, all the best.

A true Guild HB1 will not fit in a standard humbucker route, so it really depends on how the guitar is built as to whether or not it will fit.

Thanks. I'm imagining I'd have to have someone re-route the guitar, not positive. I'm curious what people think might sound good in there, assuming it could be made to fit.

Fender (or possibly Squire) sells a tele guitar with the Guild LB-1 pickup in the neck, or at least they did when Fender owned Guild. Put any humbucker u like in the neck of a tele. just pair it with a bridge pickup that is a good match. Most thinline teles come with 2 Fender humbuckers, have you considered those?

I wanted to put an old DeArmond on my Tele, but it was going to take too much routing. Old one are very pricey, but I’ll bet it would sound fantastic.
Disclaimer: I am a blues and roots guy exclusively. Might suck if you’re a hard rock guy.

I have a partscaster tele that has a 1990's Fender-made DeArmond 2000 in the neck position. I've criticised those pickups before on here for not being like the real deal 1950's/1960's DeArmond 2000's, but on a tele that's actually a plus. An old DeArmond is almost too big (deep) for a tele body, and too loud as well, unless you have another loud pickup in the lead slot. So the pickup that's in this guitar is what came in some import Gretsch guitars in the 1990's, in the Guild X160 Rockabilly, and very similar to what Guild sells as a Dynasonic now.

That sounds really cool. That's terrific playing. I will check out your channel for more examples. Awesome.
