Columbo was one of those roles that no one else could do, but Peter Falk. What a classic he was!

I actually met him once. After literally falling over him. In south island New Zealand, 2000. Me on a cycle trip. Pulled into a shoreside motel. Outside the bar, trip over this little guy on the phone. Peter Falk. Nice guy too.

In the bar, he is joined by Bob Hoskins and another quite well known actor. They were filiming a movie down there. I forget the name of the movie.
