Somehow I ended up with a vintage BMW R60, dunno if it had anything to do with the book. I've always loved bikes, which is why the title attracted me, I guess I thought it was about bike maintenance ;]

Did you see Long Way Round with Ewan McGregor and buddy going around the world on a couple BMW's?

Now, that's my kind of reality show ;]

Never ridden a motorcycle and have not seen that show, but it sounds great.
You probably get this a lot, but I hope I get to buy you a beer one day, and just listen to you tell stories.

It was a great show, especially if you like Ewan in movies, one of the stranger ones being Cassandra's Dream.

If I ever make it to the Rose City again... for sure. Only 5 hours down US5 by way of the Dalles.

How's the vintage guitar scene down there?

I remember hitting all the good stores some years back, getting some great stuff.

Conversely, I remember running into a couple of the same guys up here hitting the vintage stores, buying all the good underpriced stuff to take back down there.

Something I liked about Portland, the bicycle culture. Lots of bikes, lots of cool bikes, messengers.

And another I thing I remember, The Church of Elvis ;]

And killer food at the buffets in Chinatown.

In the 90's I had a GF with a sister in West Lynn, so we went there a lot.

I dislike your threat to dislike Guildedagain's post, so I disliked your post to keep you humble. So dislike that Ruedinator!;)

This has caused a misunderstanding, so I want to make this clear publicly: This was not a threat at all. It was a comment on the new function to dislike on the forum in general, and I was not referring to @Guildedagain's post at all. I should have been more clear - sorry for this.

No sweat on like/dislike.

Yes, I'd like to write a book, but a tell all... not sure I want to do that to myself. Maybe something more rambling like Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

I went through a lot of wild stuff in the 70's, free love... being repeatedly approached by molesters, etc. High speed car chases being in the wrong car at the wrong time, shot at by cops, hitchhiking across the country, going from BC to Quebec. Three college degrees, raising a girl by myself, she's 35 now with 4 year old miracle baby that was born premie only weighing 1 1/2 lbs but made it into a gorgeous kid.

I have 4 other grandkids from my son who was 16 when he started, and the had three more including twins, the oldest one is going on 20 and trans, life has a lot of curveballs...
Love it!!!!💞

Well, the vintage scene here is okay, I suppose. I feel like with everyone on Instagram these days, there’s no good deals anymore. Anything decent gets sold in minutes, and usually to another dealer who marks it up 300%. I’m all for making money, but especially being a lefty, it’s tough to find a decent deal. I’ve been looking for a lefty vintage Strat for years, but the few out there are either very suspect, or ludicrously priced. Sigh...

Yeah, there are some shops here that travel to other states to find deals and bring stuff back. Kinda lame.

The food is still great here, but now I’m just depressed thinking about a lefty ‘64 Strat...

A lefty '64 Strat...

And in a rare finish, Shoreline Mist, Aztec Gold, Mary Kaye, Coral Pink ;]

I traveled out of state once for a 1976 Lefty Sunburst Strat that weighed near ten pounds, some old country player wayyyout in the boondocks. Chatted for a while, bought it, and started beating it home, it was getting late and dark. I come into this little town, Spirit Lake, and it's foggy and I missed the 30mph sign, and I get pulled over.

He comes up to the car and says, verbatim "You need to be careful, we got a lot of drunks walking around", I tried to talk my way out it, apologizing, etc, but he gives me a ticket.

So I mailed it in.

And then comes a letter. The amount wasn't right. They want the same amount again.

So I called their courthouse and said that ain't right, I signed the ticket for that amount, not twice that amount. And the gal says write a letter to the judge, and so I did. And never heard back.

So iweeks go by and it's due in a week, I called back, and they said "why did you write a letter to that judge, wrong court", and wisely advised me to just pay it.

So I paid it.

A couple weeks later, I get a letter from the DOL, says I got a ticket out of state, didn't pay it and I'm going to be suspended.

So I call that courthouse again, "Any way y'all can Fax a letter to out our DOL that says I paid it?". Nope, never heard of Fax apparently...

So I had to drive out of state to their courthouse, get a letter, and stand in line at my DOL with 200 stinky people trying to get a license so I can show the letter in person and not get suspended. It was down to the wire, one day left. This is a full six months after my trip to get the Strat.

I sold the Strat, but never forgot about the trip...

And I still have the vintage stand it came with, most vintage USA stand I've ever seen, its branded "It's a Hamilton", and my Strat is on it as I type ;]

This is what I would do if I wanted a "vintage Lefty Strat". Forget Fender, it ain't gonna happen unless you think you're good enough to drop $20k on a guitar that somebody else put together from parts... The vintage AVRI Fullerton or even Corona guitars have gone crazy in price also, more in the realm of "collectors" than players.

Start looking for an olde Warmoth or Boogie Body Lefty body. Then look for a Warmoth neck. Electronics are near a dime a dozen and everywhere.

Warmoth will make you anything you want. Any neck radius you want, and the 10-16 compound radius plays like a dream.

I had a real 1960 Strat. The frets were awful, and even the guitar techs in town wouldn't touch it "because of the value". So I found this young luthier, cocky as hell, said "he'd mastered the blues while he was still in High School" and he was wiling to refret it, and I let him.

So it's refretted and the radius is so round, you can't bend the strings past the 12th ftret without the notes dying out, unless you raise up the strings like crazy. So I says "What it I flatten the frets out in the middle". He didn't want nuthin to do with that, but he said I could use his tools, so I did it. Never even heard of a compound radius but it seemed like a good solution to a real problem.

Later, right after a house break-in where some cranksters stole my VCR and leather jackets but left my Les Paul Flametop, the '60 Strat and a Blackface Deluxe Reverb, I sold the Strat to the biggest collector in town, and one day he called me and he says "Who did the fret job?, it's incredible"...

Nah, I don’t care about the finish, although I think ATB recently sold a Lake Placid lefty ‘64 for like $48k.... I do love custom color Strats, but there’s some hint about a beat up ok’d sunburst that is so cool...
For me it’s about owning a piece of history, and also of course about the sound.
I have owned some nice Strats. USA Fender, MIJ Fender (superior IMO), some custom built ones (K-Line, Smitty), and one I built myself from parts, as you describe (USA CG neck with a Brazilian RW board that I sourced myself from a local luthier and had them use for the board). They are/were all great guitars and I love the one I built. A shop here in town had a ‘64 Strat for sale recently (righty of course). I brought my Strat with me and decided to compare (I can play a righty decent enough). My Strat, which I love, made with all the best parts I can get (Don Mare pickups, Raw Vintage saddles/springs, etc), honestly sounded like a toy next to the Original. The ‘64 was so much fatter and more 3D, and this was playing through a Vibro Champ...
Maybe I was just imagining it because of being in awe of the real deal, who knows... I went there with the intention of proving to myself that my custom built Strat was just as good as any vintage one. The exact opposite happened unfortunately. It made me really want the real deal... I know it’s not easy to find. I know it may be hit or miss. I’m still going to keep looking. Sigh...
