As my boredom sets in super high gear...... I keep busy with projects. Trying to clean up the guitars and get 'em well groomed. Well tonight was Taylor night. I play this guitar a lot. It's small, Grand Concert, and it's just comfortable and easy to play and sounds great. When you're on a bed or chair or something, it's easy to grab and play. Anyway, here's the Taylor GC-8 all cleaned and polished and restrung. Sounds great and that rosewood back?? Hard to beat.....

Yeah, J and level 8 trim with bound fretboard and a slotted headstock that's got rosewood veneer. Short scale. Ebony fretboard and bridge. The wood on this is incredible. And I'm not sure if it's because it was built for it (kinda doubtful) or it's just that I've PUSHED it these last 9 years that it just seems to handle whatever I throw at it. It's not a dread or a jumbo but even when I push it, it still doesn't break down much. It's like it has a limiter on it or something, you know. So no matter how hard you push it just says, this is all you're getting, but it never sounds bad. It's broke in super well..... i love this little guitar!!

J, it was my third guitar. I moved to Vegas with the Guild D65S and the Washburn, which is beautiful but not satisfying acoustically. Plugged in it's great but I didn't even have an amp back then. So then I was here on the forum and I wanted another guild but mostly I wanted small (concert-ish), and rosewood (didn't have one yet), short scale (hard to find) and something finished nicely and easy to play. So Guild had nothing in that category at that time. Still don't I don't think. So i ventured out and looked and when I went to GC (back when they were good and had fun and talented people) and met Mark S. who was amazing and we're friends to this day. The Taylor was lovely and he played it really well and made it come alive and it was marked down from whatever the MSRP was (like $2995) and they got it down to $2398. So I left it and came back 3 weeks in a row to play it and then on the 4th time to play, it was marked down to $1998. So I played it again, and he played it again and I made an offer, he had to get the GM and they said no, so I made another offer, and he went away to think or calculate and came back with no again. So then I got up, and said okay, this is my final offer, I'll give you $1800 out the door, taxes and case included and DONE!! (Which was actually less than my other offers with all the gyrations....) and he came back and said okay. . And I made sure that Mark got the commission (back when they did such things) and I walked out of there with this guitar!! Super killer deal. I think the fact that it has that dark streak where the bookmatched Sitka meets at the bottom has a dark line. The wood is good, the joint is flawless, it's just a coloration issue. They had another one in stock and they brought it out and it was pretty, didn't have that dark stripe, and it didn't sound as good and they said, they couldn't do the same deal because that one was "unplayed". So I was getting a demo model. So what? That poly finish is amazing..... It was a good addition to the stable and I've never once regretted that decision. The slotted headstock is so nice and light and Taylor supports their stuff so well. One day I was winding a tuner and the bone (look) button just shattered. I called them and mailed the pieces back with a return auth #. an within 2 days I had a brand new tuner to install!!

Looks superb .. but here's something to consider .. have you ever tried winding the strings on 2,3,4 and 5 to the inside so the strings run in a straighter path to the nut slot?
Doesn't work on some slot-heads but I use it on my Martin JDPII pictured below.

p.s. These are Waverly tuners but I do like that scooped out area on those Taylor string shafts.

Bruce, I've done it both ways. The previous winding was done to the inside and that 4th wound string was so dangerously close to the wood that it bothered me. Doesn't seem to have rubbed any finish or wood or anything. Then the last Taylor string winding video I watched they actually did a slothead and said ALWAYS make sure they wind to the outside (didn't say why, tho) and I thought maybe it had something to do with the pressure inwards helping to lock the winds down tighter. Yeah, I really like the bevel that Taylor has on those slothead tuners they use. Not my favorite tuners and they're awkward to adjust, but once they're strung and done, it's off my mind for a while. This time I used the D'Addario EXP14's which is the coated, 80/20 bronze with the medium lows and light high strings. Something new for this guitar. Sometimes smaller guitars come alive with those strings. Don't really need that with the bigger dreads and jumbos. I also use those on my Breedlove Oregon Concert Rogue (the blue one) which is a tiny bit bigger than the Taylor and a bit deeper as well. Also it's Myrtlewood b/s, and Sitka top. That guitar SHINES with those strings!!

p.s. - Bruce that's a beautiful headstock on that guitar. I'm trying to find what the guitar looks like by looking up the model # but no luck. I really like a nice slothead.

It's the second Diane Ponzio signature series.
She used the J-14 fret body on both series - basically the 0000/M body with dreadnought depth.
Slot-head - large sound-hole - Italian Alpine Spruce/Mahogany.
