No problem. I wasn't sure why it made you smile but you didn't do anything that needed an apology.

+1. I just thought I was missing something that made that song funny! It was a question based on curiosity, nothing more.

Believe it or not I got front row seats to see Vanilla Fudge in October! Original members other than bass player, Tim Bogart, who passed away recently.
I did get to see the original members about 15 years ago.
Interestingly led Zeppelin was the opening act back in 68/69! Apparently they told Led Zep they needed bigger amps!

So the story goes the band went to see the Supreme's, got high on likey more than weed, and then did the "You keep me hanging on cover".

Apparently the band couldn't get a name that the studio executive liked and when a secretary at the recording studio told them her dad's nickname for her was "vanilla fudge" they found a winner.

Drummer and bass player went on to form Cactus then joined up with Jeff Beck in Beck, Bogart and Appice.

Word has it Deep Purple Hammond tone was based on the Vanilla Fudge tone. Not sure if that is true as VF uses a lot of fast Leslie swirl. However the overdriven tube amp tone is similar.

This came out on a 45 rpm (set to music) when I was in high school, and was all the rage in my circle of friends... I had the 45 rpm of it, and one day my Dad decided to see what was on the flip side...

(Warning the following may be inappropriate for some listeners) ...a tune called "Stacey Brown Got Two." Not halfway thru, Dad was rolling on the floor laughing... never seen him laugh so hard in my life.

Well, because the name was sometimes listed as Billie Joe, not Billy Joe, there are many theories that the jumper was female. And perhaps making it an inappropriate song for humor, the inspiration was the murder of Emmett Till.
Yep.

FWIW, you'd have to jump headfirst to die jumping off any bridge over the Tallahachie. Delta's pretty flat

Removed my original post. I of course would not have known that song’s history or intent.

I was driving home from dump.
song came on. I thought her vocal inflection was humorous. I knew this song to be fictional and it was enjoyable.

I apologize Jeff and Fro.

Hey, Woody —

I just thought you posted it to be funny!

I always thought it was more or less fictional. I love it because it leaves the key bit to our overactive imaginations. (And because it's a lot of fun to play on guitar.)

Jon Lord (from Deep Purple) splits his signal from the Hammond, one side to a Leslie, the other to a overdriven Marshall. ;) It's the key to the DP sound w/ that mid grit and growl coming from the keys. I don't think it came from the Fudge. 🤔

And yes, Zep opened for them on a few dates in late 68. Their days opening for anyone was pretty short lived though. Fast forward 50+ years and it's Vanilla Fudge that's releasing an album of Zep covers! :p https://blabbermouth.net/news/vanil...la-zeppelin-collection-of-led-zeppelin-covers

As for songs that make me laugh, countless Zappa tunes, especially from the Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation era where Frank deliberately set out to write overtly ridiculous lyrics just to taunt critics.

There are loads of musical comics I enjoy, but most are WAY too offensive to ever post here.😉

Haha...sure of that! Vanilla Fudge didn't have many "hits" but I can say I do like a number of their covers like The Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" and The Zombies "She's not There"

The last time I saw them they told the story of the early Led Zep and announced they were going to release a Led Zep cover disc. Never saw that release until recently and saw it had a UK release a few years back.Be curious to see them do a few Led Zep covers. Certainly doesn't seem like you could do a Led Zep cover without really botching the song.

Will be seeing VF on Oct 15 at Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe, PA. Good chance I will get to hear some Led Zep covers and just maybe pickup that remastered CD.

BTW...If you love Led Zeppelin original album version music go see "Get the Led Out". By far the best of the best Led Zeppelin tribute bands!

That's a good question. Or maybe by claiming they are cover bands they aren't subject to copy rights or royalties. Good question for a lawyer in the music field.

I can think of some that are probably a bit too bawdy to post here, but I'll go with the late, lamented Daddy U-Roy's tribute to the late Queen. "Since you wear the crown, and I wear the dread".

How much do tribute bands have to pay to play other people's stuff as their whole set?
The clubs pay, in the form of hefty annual dues to ASCAP/BMI which give them a blanket liscense. (Same goes for having a juke box in a commercial establishment...or a commercial satellite radio subscription) The dues are based on # of nights per week w/ live music and max capacity ratings given by the regional fire Marshall.

In mainland Europe, it's the other way around....the bands have to pay. (Or at least used to) and this, IMO was the #1 reason why more Euro bands didn't make it big. The talent was certainly there, just not the seeds to grow. Almost EVERY great band you can think of...from the Beatles, Stones, Zep, Who, etc...all started by playing mostly covers. It's how most bands cut their teeth and build a local following, sprinkling in originals as they progress.
