Sushi and sashimi are wonderful, especially when the chef is outstanding and the seafood is high quality. Some of my nigiri favorites are unagi (barbecued eel) and saba (mackerel). I often make different kinds of maki rolls for the family.

Ceviche is also a treat, but only when the fish or shellfish is of good quality.

I ate everything in Japan EXCEPT the horse meat. I said "Nooooo Wilbur!" I don't think they got it because they didn't have the Mr. Ed Show.
My wife's family introduced me to Swedish Gustafskorv, which is a cured and smoked sausage made of horsemeat. It's also delicious!

I grew up in the water. I always got my own seafood. I knew the places where the water was clean. Many of my friends were fisherman. If I was looking for something and did not have the means to get my own, there were a few I could trust to get me something that they too would eat.
Living in Arizona I just wouldn't even consider it. Even though I crave it all the time.

The first time I had ceviche was in a bar on the beach in Mexico. I was like: "Where ya been hiding this stuff?" I immediately ordered another bowl of it.

Do any of the New Jersey people know of Bobs Seafood? It was a seafood shop for quite some time.

I eat the rolls but not the fish meat slabs laid out on the rice patty. That’s too gratuitous for me.
Duck chin is pretty good though.

It's not only the raw fish, it's the parasites involved. Look up the Liver Fluke lifecycle. That is just one of the organisms involved. Humans are a necessity in their (flukes) lifecycle. If we were removed, stopped eating raw fish, the flukes would most surely go extinct.

Well, sushi-grade fish means that it's flash frozen at deeply low temperatures for an extended period of time which kills all the parasites.

Good point jp. And you haven't had sashimi unless you've had it in Japan!

I say if you enjoy it than eat it. The fresher the better. But I will not.

Living in Ookayama, I used to buy those slabs of tuna sashimi in the market, pick up a bucket of rice on the way home, mix a little wasabi in some soy sauce to dip the sashimi in, open up some nice cold sake, that's what I call DINNER.

Of course, during the occasional conference dinner, their sashimi was a little more advanced....

So you don’t need to be near the sea
Ate lunch yesterday at a restaurant on a salt water lagoon (intercoastal waterway) on the east coast of Florida -- about 2 miles from the ocean as the flying fish flies. Wife had fried Swai from Vietnam -- I had shrimp from god-knows-where. Yep, location doesn't mean anything anymore.

I like gringo sushi, the ones with tempura etc. Not a fan of raw fish.
