That is interesting about the stereotype because when I was a kid, I also thought Guild was a budget line of instruments. I don't know why I thought that and don't even remember anyone telling me that. Maybe because everyone was playing Fenders and Gibson and I didn't know anyone who played or even sold Guilds to my memory, so I figured they must be undesireable. I had a Guild classical guitar, but when I got serious into playing classical, the thought was Ramirez, cuz that was what the pros were playing mostly, it seemed. So I guess that reinforced the stereotype.

Now I only have my random sample of my one FMIC NS Starfire to compare to my Gibson and Fender and Ricky basses. But I would not call it a budget instrument since it holds its own with all of those, though the Ric is way above the others on the craftsmanship level.

It's nice to see you appreciate it. But that's an unusual perception.

I thought the same thing. Being a huge Chris Squire fan, I've anted a Ric for as long as I can remember. The problem is that every one of the dozens that I have played felt cheap (far cheaper than any of my three Pilots), and they also have weird ergonomics that certainly aren't for everyone. Maybe there's a Ric out there with my name n it, but in almost 50 years, I've yet to find it.

I speak of the “other” basses of mine. The Ric is waaaaay better made than my NS Starfire Bass. But sound wise they are on the same level. Just different.

Hmm... My Pilot Pro which I got in late summer/early fall 1994 had the same control arragnement they talk about- volume for each PUP with bass and treble boost/cut pots, all mounted on a PCB. I know I got it in '94 becasue I sold my '78/'79 ish StingRay to Dan Lakin to buy the Guild. A few weeks after I sold him my 'Ray Dan announced his new bass company, Lakland with the 4-94 and 55-94.

Regarding Ric QC- it's a crapshoot over the different decades, just like most companies.
