The Grateful Dead posted a cool photo from 1967 with a shot of Phil's Big Red Starfire Bass:

I think this is before any major mods - not the greatest pic for details but cool to see Phil hunched over it, clutching his pick and playing up high on the neck!

Photograph by Leni Sinclair. That caught my eye because I'm in the midst of Wayne Kramer's autobiography.

But they are facing away from the band!

See i thought he/she was laying on his/her back, facing the band, but I know there are at least 2 documented cases of me being wrong in the past :D
Those do kinda look like bangs on the right there

I'm thinking facing the band. There might be bangs but it could also be the spot at the back of the head where a center part stops. As a thought exercise, imagine a balding male who loses their hair on the top but nor the sides. Replace the center part and a couple of inches to each side with scalp and it looks familiar.

I'm seeing his head face down on his right arm. If you are seeing his left arm, his face up, then he's facing the band.

Somewhere there is a Deadhead laughing at us getting ready to post a link to a thread that identities the listener and has a brief interview. And someone else is wondering why we are not talking about the (probably) Kustom bass cabinet or wondering what the box in the floor is that has a handle on the side and why the roadie didn't wrap the one mic cable and...

I forgot the arm.

If it's me, I'm on my stomach, head on my right arm and facing away. The other postures are possible but not what I would do to be comfortable.

So there, FB.

Thanks for posting the picture! I should have done that, and was prepared to, but got distracted. Not as distracted as everyone else is by the person lying on the ground though! Any thoughts on the bass people?!! 😉

There are good shots of what I think is the same bass from a free concert in NYC (Columbia?) circa 1969(?). It has been discussed in a couple other threads. My recollection is that bass had no obvious proto-Alembic mods. The discussion I recall concerned a couple of sliver "dots" which no one figured out and may have been cosmetic or maybe used when a spotlight was doubling as a range finder. In any event, I can't see enough to tell whether they are there or not.

Ha! Me, too, that's why I assumed that position!

On my screen I see an eyebrow on the face, too, and forearm would only be that shape if inside wrist was on floor, so yes definitely right arm.

Blew it up and if you say there is a closed eye with eyebrow or eyelashes visible I'm not going to argue.

But what about the other striped shirt and the only pair of white pants?

That cat looks like he has a super 8 video camera. If we can locate him than we will have all the answers and possibly a better shot of Big Red. Remember Big Red? That’s the title of this thread not Dude Laying on Stage!🤣
