I was looking to get one of these flatop acoustic electrics but don't really want to spend the high amount of money for a peregrine or paloma. I was wondering if anyone has played the Epiphone version of the Chet Atkins series SSTs (nylon or steel). Are they junk or worth learning on? I'm not looking to gig with it per se, just play around with finger picking in my "studio."

I've not played one of the Epi Chets, but I've heard that they are not up to most Epi standards. I'll second the suggestion on Godin. I have a Godin nylon electric and I really like it. I think it's as good as, but different than, my Gibson Chet Atkins nylon.

Wow those Godins are nice! The biggest complaint I've read about the peregrine/paloma is the electronics aren't very powerful and don't give a lot of control for your tone. Do you guys know if the Godins play as well as the Guilds (action, lightweight, etc)? The electronics look way beyond the Guilds.

Re: Peregrine/Paloma question/some sweet pickin' here too

I owned one for a while, but sold it with the option of buying it back when I could afford it. Great guitar, makes you want to play. Buster B. Jones gave a Godin workshop, that I attended. The man, and the guitar blew me away. He also demonstrated its abilities via a Roland Synth. Here are a couple of vids to enjoy. Unfortunately, Buster died in Feb, this year. But here he is to enjoy, and you get an idea of the beauty of this instrument too. Mighty fine pickin' :D :D :D Steffan

So all the pieces fell into place on this one. I looked up the Godin on harmony-central and whatnot, then the Guitar Center in Villa Park got one in their inventory. Went and tried it out and immediately thought, yup that's exactly what the reviews/videos indicated. Great feel and can switch between a finger picking or use a pick. Sweet. Then not a week later, my tax refund direct deposits and this beauty shows up on eBay at a great price:

One last question, would D'Addario classic nylon extra tension be the right choice of strings? A few websites mentioned it. Thanks for all the input.
