Went to see the surgeon for my post-op visit today (everything way ahead of schedule), but while I was sitting in the car in the parking lot, some guy came out of the building with his face all swaddled up in a surgical mask. Then as he walked to his car he proceeded to pull off the mask so he could fire up a smoke :p:p .
Laughed so hard my incision hurt!

Well, he doesn't want to die from a virus, apparently, but other causes like lung cancer are okay. It's his choice. Be careful with the sternum while you're guffawing!!!

Yeah, I saw 2 gals pull up to the convenience store in their car, the passenger was on oxygen, and they were both smoking...

I just passed 22 years of NOT smoking, just thankful for having been delivered from this nasty addiction.

Yikes! Someone on oxygen should NOT be out of the house! Talk about high risk for the virus - it's respiratory! Stupid!

in 1991 my father was dying of lung cancer. One Sunday afternoon the family gathered at the hospital for a visit. My sister, her husband, and my cousin left the room to go outside, stand directly under the window to my father's room, and smoke. When they came back I asked them if they couldn't see what cigarettes did to the human body; they just shrugged. My sister has since died at the age of 51 from cancer. Me? I've been cigarette free for over 33 years - thank God!

My uncle died of throat cancer when I was just a youngster, but I remember he had a hole in his throat and a "voicebox." He would still smoke cigarettes through the hole in his throat...addictive? Nah

Quit in 1984 after smoking from 1965, starting in college. I smoked some really BAD stuff in India while a Peace Corps volunteer (1969-71). Something called "Panama" and "Four Square". Then the lowest of the low, "Charminar" and then worst, beedies...like a small cigar, only many times more unhealthy. I'm still alive!

I am seriously considering taking it up—smoking! (Let me explain): I am middle aged. For the past ten years (since April of 2011), I have been bombarded with second-hand smoke so thick you cannot even think; let alone breathe. And while, depending on the locale (in the first half-decade, I moved 3 times: all various sized apt (large bldgs. where everybody smoked on the fire escapes and got a good view of the lake), or just out their windows! To duplexes. I now reside in a home and have been here for 5 years - my family owns it, so I can’t move — not that that’s done much! You can scout the place in advance, and then someone else neighbor wise can just move in, and completed change your outlook. What I would say I have been subjected to is nearly 100% second hand smoke at night , and a minimum of 75% during the day, depending on the place I lived. Where I currently reside, I have 4 guys in their 30’s immediately next to me (maybe 10 ft tops!), all who smoke something different—cigs/vape/pot. None of them seem to work - or if they do - they don’t have to leave the home. On the other side of them is two more Chain Smokers, followed by 4 on the other side of that (3 doors down). Up the way—the other next door, is 3-4 chain smokers who also are up all night wandering around their yard smoking. They don’t seem to work, either. Further down the road from the m a lot of folks that smoke wander on down toward my property to stand and smoke while looking out at the intersection / road. They litter my Sid e yard, car, mailbox, garage & etc with their waste, that piles up on the daily (or nightly). So it’s very much in the vain, or camp of, “if you can’t beat them, join ‘em!” I give up after a decade of choking in my sleep, eating in the smoking section for every single meal day of night. And having the resounding “whoosh!” of smoke come washing off my body / hair & skin when I first get into the shower. It’s so disgusting. I used to spend upward of $50-75 per week on air freshening supplies — none of which did a darn thing to combat the overwhelming concentration of what’s going on inside my house. You could hold your finger down on an aerosol bottle spray if Lysol for say 15 seconds, and get maybe 15 minutes of relief, in bed at night, before tha t gets overpowered again. I’m thinking non-filters; “straights,” if that’s what they’re called . I don’t have time to mess around . . ;^)) —maybe I can win rant of the year for this one (e/t it’s not guitar, related per se!): what it does do, is make you play pi**ed off, 99.9% of the time. Which is something I’ve definitely never done before this all began.:)

Sorry for your living hell situation...but I certainly wouldn't take up smoking because of it!

Maybe you could play your guitar through your amp at setting "11" until your neighbors get it...

Where do you live that you don't have windows that close and air conditioning?

Please give us -- at least -- a close geographical, nearby, location as to where you live so we will not move there. Don't understand, "my family owns it so I can't move." Think I would be looking and the first priority might be a "non smoking type dwelling ". From your, very clear, description of your environment, it would be surroundings I wouldn't miss and think my family would have encouraged a move long ago. I agree with Dread, don't take up smoking!

Where do you live that you don't have windows that close and air conditioning?

I live in a home that is well over 100 years old. So, for instance, in the wintertime (which like Holidays does absolutely nothing to deter their habits), when you humidify, much or some of it goes right out the door / windows (of which I have many: I’m counting 8 in the living room alone—or 16, depending on what you’d consider such). I could turn it into a humidor, or wrap plastic etc. but I’ve just never gotten around to, or wanted to try it... & also, I’ve almost never not lived next door to neighbors who smoked. The most recentdifference is in its intensity & frequency , as well as its proximity (when people come to visit for the first time—they think I’ve taken up smoking; & I was mostly speaking facetiously before - though the feeling is there, there’s no guarantee that I would like or enjoy it: though the small handful I’ve known who started late in life / & that’s be like half my current age - they all said the same thing, “loved it from the 1st one!” Which is a far cry from those I remember auditioning them and becoming disgusted earlier on than that). I know I could likely get a purifier - but who knows how many I’d need ;again given the lac k of a “humidity controlled environment,” which is kind of a common thing around hereunless you’ve got a newer Holme or have taken the necessary extra steps in term s of precautions. One other illustration. My sister has smoked since the age of 13 (she s in her late30’s now). She smokes in her house and always has. When she come s over, she complains. Though, she probably doesn’t smoke nearly as much as they do.:)

My neighbor, John, smokes out in his garage which is right next to ours with a small courtyard type area between them. He doesn't smoke inside. His wife vapes out in the garage. I don't smell anything at all unless I'm standing and talking to him WHILE he is smoking and he keeps his garage door open all summer and winter. I just don't smell it. I can't imagine how your house is full of smoke if no one actively smokes in it. John is also a radiology tech, you'd think he's seen scary enough chest x-rays to get him to quit but apparently not........

You’re right, I made it all up-

I don't think anyone is accusing you of making it all up. But, like Tom, I'm having a hard time imagining how you could be subject to significant second hand smoke from your neighbors' houses. You mentioned numbers like 100% and 75%... We're just trying to wrap our heads around this, not trying to call you out on it. Maybe, as GAD suggested, your sense of smell is way better than mine.

Anyway, no need to go away in a huff. We're a pretty non-confrontational bunch even if we do sometimes say what's on our minds. I've never once thought that Tom was being a dick here on LTG. (I'm a different story. I've definitely been a dick more than a few times.)
