Hi all,

first post. I’ve just bought and received an Oxnard (2020) D40e.

Ive been longing for a guild ever since I picked up one 10 or so years ago and it was a weight, hearty acoustic.

I’ve read the threads, but haven’t seen much on people who have Oxnard dreads. So far, I’m liking the sound and feel. I get it, satin finish, no dovetail etc, but in terms of sound , any thoughts from the group?

Welcome to LTG! We love photos and would love to see your new guitbox. I'm sure some D-40 owners will be along soon to welcome you. :)

Do not own one but played an Oxnard D40 Traditional and really liked it. The sound was pleasing to my ears. Did not see or hear one thing that would make me dislike it.
Welcome!

Thanks, y’all! I’ll get some pics up for sure!

mine is the “standard”
So not traditional, and I’ve heard the adi bracing makes it “tighter”

this one is a beauty (I quite like matte/satin finishes)

The D-40 I have carries a great sound and is super responsive - not sure if it has the guild sound (not played enough other guilds to know) but I certainly prefer it to my Martin!

Which Martin? I tend to think Guild's more balanced dreadnaughts can work against them on the showroom floor. That Martin dread bass is seductive. Reason to have both. I'd generally take a D 55 over the typical D 35, D 28, etc. Martin. It has taken a good long time for me to prize evenness over bass, but I did get here.

Thanks!
I have a Martin DM from 08 (doesn’t compare) and a D-18 - it’s an old one, not super old but I don’t know the year. Hand me down (and a pretty awesome hand me down!)

pics of the new guild here for those who’ve asked !

Nice! I'm so glad Guild went back to the wide headstock on their acoustic guitars. So classic!

I played a D40 Traditional at Sam Ash here not long ago, and was impressed by its lightness and resonance. I have the hog dread thing covered already, so I didn't buy it, but if I was in the market it would have been on a short list. Play it in good health, and welcome to LTG!

I’ve seen the threads around traditional vs ‘standard’

does this group have a view on whether we’re waiting to see how the ‘standards’ age, or of its traditional or nothing?I could probably stretch to a traditional - my hesitation is 3 fold:

1. I am wanting a pickup. I know, after market...
2. Jury is still out on Oxnard anything, as far as I’m aware
3. (Why I’m not going for a vintage - I want one I break in, and just don’t know if the differences will, over time, be that great - genuinely don’t but I’d you guys have views, of love to hear ‘em.) (I know you’re not really an opinionated bunch 🙃)

I'd not exactly say the "jury is out" on Oxnard at all. They're been consistently cranking out different models for a while now and the picture I'm getting is of well made, well designed guitars that play well and sound amazing as far as the USA built goes. Traditionals are just more fancy with more (for lack of a better word) "traditional" finishes and such. I doubt there's a huge sound quality difference in the two models, but you'd have to play them side by side. Every guitar is different to me, regardless what numbers and letters it may have in common with another. Congrats.

This is the widest of generalizations, liberally sprinkled with personal bias. Somewhere around the forty year mark, provided a guitar has been played, wood just sounds it's best. It looks it's best too as it has weathered the bumps and bruises of use. The era before the beefier builds of the late 60s into the middle 70s has hit that sweet spot, but with that has come the issues of age like neck angle. To get one, you must put up with the other, and while not yet truly vintage, prices have caught up with and perhaps passed the price of new. And new guitars are good. Do not buy a guitar with the expectation of it getting better. Frank Ford gave me that advise years ago. Throw in a heap of nostalgia, my D 35 is a guitar I would have lusted after when I was 20, and the clear waters of fact become murky indeed. But it does meet criteria I have found in many guitars, old and new, of being a light build. That is something that almost always has translated into the guitar I prefer. Guild's big hurdle is developing a larger dealer network. You can't like what you can't play. Inventory cost is significant for a small shop that may already carry several name brands.

I have yet to encounter an Oxnard Guild.

This is a big problem because Guild hasn't been out there at GC and other places to play in many, many years when speaking of new guitars! Do I think they can compete? Certainly!! But people can't choose something they can't lay their hands on, and guitar stores want to sell what they stock!! So Guild is overcoming years of invisibility to guitar store buyers and that's gotta be huge. Right? Every catalogue that I get in the mail AMS, etc., unless I've missed something I don't see Guilds. I guess there's a certain "cachet" with making people LOOK and HUNT for your products and WONDER how they must sound but, why do that? Get 'em out there. Get some guitars at GC and put your product in the catalogues. But there's Breedloves!! And when I fish through and my #2 brand is there begging me to try new stuff and "look at this"!! The company needs some help...... my opinion.

Resurrecting this thread to ask is we know when guild went away from stickers proclaiming the build location?
I cannot see a reference to Oxnard or CA anywhere on this guitar...

If it is a current day or more recent Guild, you should find information etched (burned or printed) onto a piece of wood placed inside on the neck block. Most likely model, serial number, and location. That's where they put the guitar information these days. Here you can see the paper label and above that on the neck block the wood piece with more information.

I have the burned/etched model # and ‘made in USA’, but no sticker and not one mention of Oxnard....I’ve a d40e that has a serial number which begins 20 so I’m guessing it’s a 2020 production.

Wonder why your guitar doesn't have a paper label? I'm not sure how to decode the serial numbers for year, but that may be true. Someone here knows. It's obviously a USA made Guild because you access the truss rod through the cover on the headstock. Overseas models you access through the soundhole. That's just a quick easy "tell" for determining where the guitar is made. And regardless of not saying Oxnard, CA on the paper label, that is currently the only factory Guild has in the USA as far as I know so that's where it was made for sure. Wonder what happened to the label? Was it sold used or was it a second or anything? It's a super nice looking guitar.

I purchased new (first ever new new guitar!) from a reputable online dealer (couldn’t find a local deal who stocked Guild) - they had several models available and none seemed to have paper labels - maybe they’re doing away with those for Oxnard?

It’s a real nice play, I’ve really enjoyed the first month or so!
