I was loading up the book shelves last night and it dawned on me...I like a lot of cool stuff.

No, not baseball cards or what some may consider everyday interests.

Mostly stuff I enjoyed prior to marriage, (at 45)

Examples:

Probably 9 books on Formula One..and a lovely framed 1966 Monaco GP poster featuring Graham Hill in his Lotus. Been to 2 F-1 races, used to rue the fact in the 70's it was not uncommon to lose 1 or 2 of the Michael Jordans of the sport each year. How many people have a 16 year old daughter who knows who Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel are??

Several books on old British cars.

12 Books on Everest, K2, Seven Summits or 8,000 meter expeditions...same hero's rule as F1 used to apply

Chapman's Piloting & Seamanship-along with 7 or so books on sailing/racing/cruising plus inumerable charts for the Great Lakes, (Ontario & Erie) and NYS Barge canal system. Owned an old Owens wood cabin cruisers and 3 sailboats....still have a 16' day sailor for camp.

Maps/books on evey inland waterway for canoeing/kayaking. Try to kayak/canoe at least once a week during season.

Watsons Guide to paddling the Rideau Canal....someday!

3 books on oriental rugs, 5 on old blue decorated stoneware from the 1800's....wife likes em...think I have too many guitars?...15 years ago oriental rugs were passe...I pounced.

Maps and books for every trail in the ADK's and Catskills. Been backpacking all my life. Will go this weekend for an overnighter to try out my new bag...calling for 6 below zero! Bag is rated for 30 below which is required/recommended for overnights in the ADK's. Did the Northville-Placid trail a few years back!! Might go snowshoeing tonight in the woods behind the house.

Jancis Robinson's Oxford Companion Encyclopedia of Wine, (gift), Hugh Johnson, Waugh, back when I was really enjoying learning about off beat varietals.

During packing/unpacking I laughed at the amount of old copper pots and pans I have....luckily wife likes those too and they are visible in kitchen.

Waaaay too many Griswold cast iron pans...hey there's more than one golf club in a bag...wife doesn't care for them, one is stored in stove but she won't use it.

Lots more.

It has been fun to reconnect with some of the stuff I've amassed over the decades. Life took a major turn for me 17 years ago so it's nice to look back on who I was before a Husband/Dad.

It's 3;30, been up since 2. I'm laying here on the couch looking out at the snow blowing, 2 of the small dogs snoring on my lap, one of the cats incessantly prodding me to pet him. Work has been steady, we're all healthy in spite of 2 Covid cases and the bee attack earlier this year. Thank goodness for smart phones as my daughter is not stuck here "alone" w/us.

I pulled All Creatures Great and Small off the shelf and read two chapters before jumping on the computer, think I'll read another before I jump in the shower!

I feel good!

Enjoyed that Beecee!
Metal work on old school manual lathes and mills gives me a great deal of pleasure. Something about getting a phone call and person on the other end needing a metal piece made that is no longer produced or can be found. Good test to see if you can figure out how to make it and see the smile on their face. Most interesting work I have done is to restore an old 1915 2HP Root and Vandervoort Hit and Miss engine that had been outside in a scrap iron pile for 53 years. It took 18 months to get piston unstuck.
Just love going to my metal shop.
No charge for work -- I am not skilled enough for that!

Might build a cart and mount an old hand turned White Mountain ice cream freezer on it some way. I see a pulley on right middle of picture. You would have to figure out size pulley to put on ice cream freezer to slow it way down to 60--90 rpms.

I'm a big auto racing fan. Although mostly NASCAR and short track racing, I did attend the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix when it was still an F1 race.

I've been to over 150 race tracks across the good ole' USA including the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500. I've traveled to 49 of the 50 states. Alaska is in the planning stages once this Covid crap is done with!

I'm a mostly inactive ham radio op, nw1k, fist licensed in '64 but with a decade or so lapse in licensing. Enjoyed 35mm photography, with a pretty good darkroom (still have it, but in storage). Recently got a Pentax DSLR that is compatible with my three lenses, haven't done much with it yet. Used to do a lot of cooking, but my wife has pretty much taken over that lately. Big Red Sox fan, but baseball is the only sport I follow, although I did watch some of the playoffs last weekend and will probably watch at least some of the Super Bowl.

My other passion is cycling, mostly mountain biking but I own a road bike and a fat bike, which has 4" wide tires for floatation and traction in snow. Riding dirt trails while traveling/camping with my wife is our main activity for fun and fitness, although it's getting tougher to do this as we age into our 60's.

I am not a woodworker or metal worker. Like Bill Cosby said "Everything I ever started to make in shop class turned out to be an ashtray"

I did, however, become an electronic soldering guru.

When people considering marriage ask my advice I include a comment that they need to buy their toys before they get married. After marriage, the money to buy toys and the time to play with them is often lacking or obtained at the cost of building the marriage.

I was a student of the American Civil War and gathered a number of books related to the subject. Still have the books and use them for reference but the pace of buying has slowed dramatically.

Cooking. But not baking.

Funny! I like to bake but not to cook, although I have to cook or else we'd all starve around here and since I have to I try to make it taste as good as I can (hey, I've got to eat it too) and that's why I ask you guys for your recipes. I'm convinced that the reason Mrs. Dread looked so happy in that anniversary photo you posted is because she married someone who can cook!

In the meantime cheesecake is the next baking plan, and a Mississippi pot roast the next cooking plan.

Completed a project for friend this morning at metal shop. Gave me an opportunity to take couple pictures of 1915 R & V engine with "work britches" on. John Deere green is color of fully restored ones.
Thanks Frono for suggestions.

That looks great, Effingy! Will have to pass this recipe on to Mrs. Dread, she's the baker in this house.
