I was loading up the book shelves last night and it dawned on me...I like a lot of cool stuff.
No, not baseball cards or what some may consider everyday interests.
Mostly stuff I enjoyed prior to marriage, (at 45)
Examples:
Probably 9 books on Formula One..and a lovely framed 1966 Monaco GP poster featuring Graham Hill in his Lotus. Been to 2 F-1 races, used to rue the fact in the 70's it was not uncommon to lose 1 or 2 of the Michael Jordans of the sport each year. How many people have a 16 year old daughter who knows who Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel are??
Several books on old British cars.
12 Books on Everest, K2, Seven Summits or 8,000 meter expeditions...same hero's rule as F1 used to apply
Chapman's Piloting & Seamanship-along with 7 or so books on sailing/racing/cruising plus inumerable charts for the Great Lakes, (Ontario & Erie) and NYS Barge canal system. Owned an old Owens wood cabin cruisers and 3 sailboats....still have a 16' day sailor for camp.
Maps/books on evey inland waterway for canoeing/kayaking. Try to kayak/canoe at least once a week during season.
Watsons Guide to paddling the Rideau Canal....someday!
3 books on oriental rugs, 5 on old blue decorated stoneware from the 1800's....wife likes em...think I have too many guitars?...15 years ago oriental rugs were passe...I pounced.
Maps and books for every trail in the ADK's and Catskills. Been backpacking all my life. Will go this weekend for an overnighter to try out my new bag...calling for 6 below zero! Bag is rated for 30 below which is required/recommended for overnights in the ADK's. Did the Northville-Placid trail a few years back!! Might go snowshoeing tonight in the woods behind the house.
Jancis Robinson's Oxford Companion Encyclopedia of Wine, (gift), Hugh Johnson, Waugh, back when I was really enjoying learning about off beat varietals.
During packing/unpacking I laughed at the amount of old copper pots and pans I have....luckily wife likes those too and they are visible in kitchen.
Waaaay too many Griswold cast iron pans...hey there's more than one golf club in a bag...wife doesn't care for them, one is stored in stove but she won't use it.
Lots more.
It has been fun to reconnect with some of the stuff I've amassed over the decades. Life took a major turn for me 17 years ago so it's nice to look back on who I was before a Husband/Dad.
It's 3;30, been up since 2. I'm laying here on the couch looking out at the snow blowing, 2 of the small dogs snoring on my lap, one of the cats incessantly prodding me to pet him. Work has been steady, we're all healthy in spite of 2 Covid cases and the bee attack earlier this year. Thank goodness for smart phones as my daughter is not stuck here "alone" w/us.
I pulled All Creatures Great and Small off the shelf and read two chapters before jumping on the computer, think I'll read another before I jump in the shower!
I feel good!
