Orpheum Cases and Tuning Machines

There's been a few threads on this forum about folks not caring for the cases and tuning machines on the Orpheums.

I just bought Rich Cohens Orpheum, 12 fret, slot head, RW guitar. I also have both a 12 fret and a 14 fret Mahogany six string and I just don't see any issues with the cases on any of those guitars. I also recently saw a Jumbo Orpheum case on Ebay so I bought it because I was in need of a Jumbo case for another Guild model and it too, seems to be just fine. Maybe the issues will come down the line but can somebody refresh my memory regarding what the issues are on these caes??

I can maybe see the complaint on the tuning machines. Both my six strings seem to be a bit tight and harder to tune up or down than I'd like but certainly not a show stopper. The 12 string tuning machines work just fine.

The problem is that given the lofty price of these instruments when new, the cases and tuners are both junk. At very least, they should have had Guild's highest end case with the faux alligator and the brass plaque, but they didn't. And the tuners are so bad that my power winder actually shattered one of the ivoroid (read: plastic) knobs, and have since been replaced by "regular" Gotoh SE700s that are much better. I've heard those G shield tuners referred to as "special", but I fail to see anything special about them.

Richard, order some of this and use it sparingly on the gears. Work it in and you can use a screwdriver on the spur gear itself to adjust the tightness of the turning.

BTW, Richard, if that's the 12-string Orph that you bought from RichC, I was the original owner. I bought that during the New Hartford close-down fire sale. I never used any tri-flow on those tuners as they worked just fine while I had the guitar.

Anyway, that now makes a couple of guitars of each other's that we own. Cheers!

I didn't know that. Glad to have this past guitar of yours in the stable. I'm not typically a big 12er fan but this is a nice, comfortable guitar and the tuning machines work pretty easily. I'm not really that much into cases and how they look. As long as they are functional and do their job to protect the guitar, I'm just fine.

Tri-Flow is good stuff for sure. The tuners on my 1922 Gibson mandolin seemed shot when I bought it. After removing them, applying a good dousing of Tri-Flow & letting it soak in for a week, the tuners became quite functional & were returned to the instrument - where they remain.

I have custody of four guitars originally in Richard's care (only two came from Richard directly) and he has (or had?) at least two of mine.

Yup Glenn, I still have at least 2 that had belonged to you. I especially enjoy the D 50.
