Original bridge posts on Westerly made X-150D were way too short. New ones made a big difference in volume.

An acquaintance of mine dropped off his Westerly made X-150D to have me make a new nut for it. I immediately noticed that acoustically it’s volume was noticeably lower than that of my Corona made X-150D. I later noticed that the saddle on his guitar was leaning a bit forward on its bridge posts. It turned out that the bridge posts on his guitar were way too short. Because they were too short, they were not screwed all the way into the bridge. And, there were only a couple of millimeters of the posts protruding into the saddle. I made and installed some new posts of the correct length for the needed bridge height. It made a huge difference in the acoustic volume of his guitar. I wonder if other Guild archtops might suffer from this? It may be worth a quick check the next time you have all of your strings removed. I believe that I used 3mm threaded stock if anyone is interested.

I don't know if the top sunk or the original posts were too short, but I had to have the posts changes with longer ones on my Artist Award in order to obtain the best string height. Does sound better now.

Interesting! I know that my Corona X-180 (fancy X-150D) is acoustically louder than my Westerly X-150D. I'll have to check out the posts next string change.

Clarifying- so the saddle and strings ended up at same height, the problem was the depth screwed into the saddle? Good thing you noticed. The bridge post is metric? Is that original?

Yes, the saddle and strings ended up at the same height.

And, yes. The bridge posts were original.

On a side note, if anyone here does need longer posts, they are easily made from screws. You can purchase some of the correct size machine screws from a hardware store. Stainless screws are fairly inexpensive. Just cut the heads off when cutting the screw to the required length. Then, use a file to file off any jagged edges.
