I'll toss out another make I haven't seen mentioned, Beyerdynamic. Either their DT770 or DT990 would come in at under $200 and I've had good luck with their models in the past, probably the most comfortable headphones I've ever used.
I had a set of DT770s and they were fabulous. For on-ears (supra-aural) they were very comfortable but I can’t take things that sit on my ears for long. Definitely worth a look.

This has been a fabulously educational thread! Thanks for everyone's contributions. I've been lurking for a few days learning.

Another consideration, and I do not have any recommendations here, is if you will be wearing glasses with the headphones on.

I have had to start wearing reading glasses and the cups press against the glasses and make them uncomfortable.

My understanding is that there are gaming headsets that address glasses wearers, but I don't know if other headsets do or not since I haven't bought a new headset in quite a few years.

Audeze has very mixed reviews. Lots of name-dropping in the ad copy which turns me off, but I’ve not tried them. For that kind of money I’d be looking at electrostatics but that’s an even deeper rabbit whole.
