...thanks for the encouragement, by the way...but it's time...

Was having the last Bud of a 12 pack last night and literally dumped it down the sink. I hit the wall so to speak...My beer floor is now higher.

So, gonna try some different cold beers, like just test some out in the 16 to 24 oz cans, like a variety of IPAs etc. I will look for the stuff that is on sale, as this stuff is typically pricey or more than I want to spend. But Circle K has deals on some good better beers in smaller quantities. I plan to start there and start slowly, till I find one I like then look to move onto a 6 pack etc.

I also want a better Guild dread...

I believe these things re related. :)

Don't know where you are, but do some research on breweries in your locale, smaller ones for sure.
You may find some excellent products that are worth the extra money.

IPA? Pilsner? Stout? ???
I think I am going to start with IPAs, but one that is not too sweet. tucson has the Dragoon IPA which is fantastic stuff. And I know the small store up street has a Founders beer, but I forget which one it is. I know I can get LaGunitas too.

A new thing starting to catch on, is the IPA Sours. Might not sound good, but they actually are tasty and refreshing.

The Dragoon IPA is outstanding, and amongst the West Coast IPAs, so is Lagunitas' Little Sumpin' Sumpin', and Sierra Nevada's Torpedo IPA. Founders Centennial is great too, and a little maltier than your typical IPA. As I mentioned earlier, the Mosaic Promise single hop ale is great also. It's a little lower ABV at 5.5%, but can be a bit hard to find. My local beer distributor hasn't had any for a while now.

You added a second story?

Guild dreads will get you through times of bad beer better than beer will get you through times of bad dreads.

Another vote for Lagunitas Little Sumpin'.

But let us know what is available both in your area AND within your price range, & you'll probably get more-appropriate recommendations.

Since somewhere my "job description" says "solve problems"...

A lot of breweries offer (usually seasonal) variety packs. It is a great way to try something different and the cost is usually limited. Worst case is you pour out 2 and a half cans cause you can't stand something. Looking for other beers by the same brewery or a style you like (in the variety) from other breweries will help expand your options.

Don't look at price. Buy what you can afford but don't choose the $10.99 12 pack because it is cheaper than the $13.99 pack. Don't get suckered into the "best buzz for the buck" because that will lead to beers that are not trying to compete on taste, just price.

Life is too short to drink bad beer.

You could also weird out folks at your local store by taking pictures of what they have on the shelves and then we can comment on what we know you can get, instead of what you might look for. But don't let the Moderators know you are being encouraged to post beer pics. Maybe we need to reimagine BGUF as Beautiful Guitars with Beers so there can be some Guild content.

funny story leading up to my leave-taking of Bud...

Nic and I are sitting in living room, decompressing a bit from a rather long dinner engagement with family of my oldest daughter's beau...
Her foot is aching (lots of standing around, for some reason, this house we were at just did not have any real seating)... so I pour her a glass of Bud and then I have the last one...was hoping it would help her pain...take the edge off etc. And we were out of wine, her preference...

"gosh this is terrible beer and it's not going to help my foot at all, you want it?"
"damn, you are right, this beer sucks. What have I been thinking all these years..." aka Frono was right.

Woody walks both glasses to sink, tosses the Bud, moves on to greater things...

really, some times, major shifts in life happen kind of all of a sudden like that...

The Founders brewery is in my home town. "Centennial" is their flagship IPA.

I've never tried this one Ralph, and it does get great reviews. But at 8.6% ABV, that's just too much. I like to have more than one before I'm completely plastered!

My first trip to Scotland was really a learning experience. Almost all the ales over there are very low ABV, often below 4%. When I asked a particularly knowledgable bartender about that he told me that the locals like the act of drinking itself (and in all fairness, the pub is the center of most social orbits there), and like to be able to enjoy a few without getting wheeled out of there.
