Well, just got this Marlen today. It had been a double neck, but Jim Palenscar of Steel Guitars of North County had converted it to a single neck. I had gotten a Maverick
Sho-Bud 50 years ago, but lost interest when I started getting into resonators and '30s lap steels, and eventually sold it. Now that I'm pretty much home all the time, and not even able to get together with the rest of our group to record, I figured I had the time to lose what little sanity I have left and fool around with pedal steel again. I've always loved the sound of a Marlen, and the fact that many considered them to be sort of an "outsider" in the pedal steel world of course appeals to my Guild "sensibilities". I like the
"beater" nature of this one--Birdseye maple--I'm not really a Formica lover which so many of the newer steels sport. I'll probably eventually fix or replace the inlays:

3 pedals, 4 levers. I'll finally have justification for keeping my Sho-Bud Xmas Tree amp for half a century. The Marlen I believe is from the early '70s, so same vintage as my amp. It was overkill to haul the sucker up to record at Steve's, and somehow wasn't the right fit for my '30s era lap steels. Makes a fantastic clean amp for guitar, though.

I had this great Sho-Bud, double 10, can't remember how many knee levers/pedals real fancy, gorgeous traded it away, way too much for the casual observer. Got it from some old guy in bib overalls, place reeked of cigarette smoke, $375, had a nice case, but the real story is that he also had a 1960 Fender Concert Amp and I bought that too for about the same price.

Edit

Good Grief, I found pictures of it.

If you ever found a guitar to be elusive, daunting, complicated, fussy, mysterious, etc, then you don't want this ;]

Congratulation! Good luck with that beast. I had a Fender 1000 years ago; Pedal guitars make standard guitar seem simple to play. I sold it before I drove myself crazy. Have fun!

I did too, mid-70s for about 6 months, six pedals, IIRC, no knee levers. I found that my years of piano lessons as a kid were more help than all my guitar experience! In the spring I traded my Tacoma F40 for a Gold Tone 8 string square neck. It pretty much sat in the case after the first week or so, but now I'm spending an hour or so every day, so starting to make some progress. Thinking about selling/trading my Godin ACS with a Roland synth to fund a six string square neck.
