If our band every plays live again, this is what I'd like for my 1930s electrics...

That is such nice little portable all-in-one enclosure.

Today they come slightly larger - like the one that Tom Danley designed for ??? - military most likely . . . It can produce sound level up to 104dB - in case that does not impress you - it was measured 250 meters away - that's roughly 820 feet !!! Next block party box . . .

For those who wish to learn more - https://www.danleysoundlabs.com/the-matterhorn/

Of course the modern Matterhorn is not as pretty as the old beauty with that lady standing next to it.

So the above is Crosley Radio Corporation’s 1936 “WLW Model Super-Power Radio Receiver”!

The full history how it was developed can be found here:

That's the same one from the front:

That looks like someting Alex Lifeson would have toured with. Kind of reminds me of my first hard drive:

There is probably at least one of these collecting dust in a military storage warehouse somewhere...

TENOR.AMP.jpg

This is what I needed to replace on stage--my best sounding amplifier--early in house made 1933 Dobro amp (which is in effect a radio without a tuner). These first ones only had an 8 inch speaker, so fine for my prototype electric National/Dobro tenor, but not so good for the bass strings on my aluminum
Dobro Hawaiian electrics. The later ones that still resembled this were made by Webster Electric Co. after the National/Dobro merge. It would have had a J.B. Lansing speaker originally, unfortunately gone by the time I got this. The tenor is my "Tele"--really bright sounding dual coil PU.

Is this the precursor to the Dead’s Wall of Sound? That looks like Jerry Garcia’s mom in the picture... no?

Did you know, that Greatful Dead's Wall Of Sound was not a pa-system as we know it? It was a rather large backline.

Quite some difference between Crosley in the 1930's and now. 1930's receiver priced at $1500, I hate to think what that would be now. Currently the name is used on some of the worst record decks ever made!
