Hello im new here..but ive been playing a long time.
is it true no more dark star pickups? Ive tried to contact him--i have an old Starfire 1-cherry-nice chunky neck but i wanted to add a bridge picup--good luthiers around here that could do a clean job.
im looking for a dark star or a bi-sonic.

Hello and welcome. Feel free to tell us more about your bass. Follow the links here for Starfire p0rn. I've been told in a private communication from someone who knows Fred in Real Life, that Dark Stars are still being made but I have not verified that personally.

Welcome!
I was worried that production of Dark Stars had ceased... going by general consensus, specifically by reports from "talkbass" forum users, it seemed that Fred took what seemed to be at least a year off from making the pickups. I have heard from a few reliable sources though that he's back at it since recently and taking/filling orders again. Good luck!

P.S. If your Starfire I is a 66 or 67, your bisonic may only have a single bar-magnet, as opposed to the dual bar-magnet design that was introduced later on and seems to be the more common one. I would look into this -- can easily be identified by popping out the pickup and looking at the bottom side. My '66 starfire had a single magnet bisonic. Therefore, when I ordered a Dark Star for an unrelated project, I asked Fred to make a single magnet Dark Star, with the thought that it might sound a bit closer to that 66 bisonic which I loved oh so much. Might be something to consider depending on what kind of bisonic is currently in your bass.

Thanks for the welcoming me to this forum,I will get pictures when I can..I dont have a camera!!!the bass is my landlords best freinds,he left it with me and said I could play it and use it on gigs..It took exactly $35 to get it into shape--played it on a gig last night and i really like it..loudest pickup except for maybe a "mudbucker"..I used a sound city 120 pa head and a fender bassman(1963)with a 2x12 and a 2x 10 so i really got to wind her up. good for Latin and also has that growling Hot Tuna dirty sound FUN

Nice. There is a lot of love for the cherry Starfire I around here, especially (in my case) for the ones with the straight bridge and no tone switch.

Starfire bass pr0n here.

Hey guys,

I might have access to 1 Dark Star pickup (not a set). It'd be a bridge pickup for the Starfire replacement set. There's a store in Chicago that's reserving a set for me and since I'm only putting one (bridge pickup) in my new Starfire, there should be one left. I might just buy both of them tomorrow and then put the second for sale on here. Anyway, more updates on that front tomorrow when I go to the store.

p.s. thread coming up soon with pictures of my new bass.

Did you ever get that dark Star???
Thanks

Just went to the store to get my bass outfitted with a DS. The other pickup is gone. Apparently someone came in yesterday and traded for it.

I'll post a new thread with pictures and details on my new '64 SF-I when I get it back from the shop next week.
