As you may have seen I have a very nice Guild X 500 incoming.

This guitar deserves a very nice strap. However : the guitar may have nitro laquer ( guitar was built in 1987 or 1988) and I don't think I would survive a "print" of my strap on the body of my guitar 😱😱😱😱
So : are there any materials I should avoid ? Also : do you leave the guitar strap attached to the guitar when in the case or should I use Straplocks ?

Greetings,

Denis

Rather than avoid materials just go for leather with no accessories or adornments (such as snaps). A blanket prohibition on synthetics, plastics or man-made materials might be overkill but those are what I recall being involved in reports of damage.

I don't leave the strap attached to the instrument in the case for two reasons. One is that I only have one strap I like and when it is in the case, attached or not, it always seems to be with the instrument I am not getting ready to play. Second, I have some cases that are snug enough that leaving the strap on actually puts pressure on the instrument. Easier to take the strap off than to worry about the possibility of damage.

Not to mention tripping a strap an knocking a guitar over, don't do it.

Ages ago, people left the old hippy straps attached to guitars in cases and they will react and leave a burn, so will guitar stands as plenty of people found out.

I don't fault the straps, just don't leave it attached but if you do, leather will not react.

I like wide leather straps. It's cooler than naugahyde, I turn them over rough side out, makes for a slick moving strap that doesn't pull on your clothing.

This is when you know you have a vintage strap problem. That picture is old, have at least three times that many now. Amazingly, I remember where each came from like a trophy.

PS You're never going to leave an imprint on your precious by just simply wearing a strap and playing the guitar, even when left on a stand, it won't do anything. It has to be left in the case, hot preferably, to ruin the guitar's finish.
