Man ... I do I ever feel old.

It is now 25 years since the death of awesome Guild girl Eva Cassidy.

The article says, ‘One of the best singers ever.’ No arguments from me.

Makes me sad when I read about her. But also pissed off. When something odd shows up go to the damn doctor! Don't wait 6 months. Now it must be said she may not have known it was there much before because it was on her back, but...

Or maybe she was like a lot of us and didn't really want to know or maybe if she ignored it, it might go away. Many deal with things like this in different ways and I for one, really kinda get that. None the less, a shame for sure.

Last Sunday in downtown Annapolis was the official unveiling of my old friend (and extremely gifted artist) Jeff Huntington's mural of Eva Cassidy. I've known the Cassidy family since my early high school days playing in the regional orchestra w/ Eva's brother Danny, who is a renown fiddle player residing in Iceland. Eva was as sweet a person as was her voice. I'm thrilled her legacy will be there for all passersby to see....right on West street just steps away from the doors of the Ram's Head Tavern. The artist, Jeff Huntington, I've known for close to 40 years. A great guy and a super talent. I own a few early pieces of his.

Some more on the artist.

The mural is a wonderful tribute to "a Maryland Songbird". I've been enjoying her music for many years now! We are lucky that thru serendipity and happy coincidence her recordings reached a broader audience after her death. I've always liked the B&W photo of her sitting in the alley with her Guild guitar in front of Blues Alley.

I hate to admit this, but I was not familiar with Eva Cassidy until about 15 years ago when my then 80 year old aunt introduced me to her music. Now whenever I hear "Anniversary Song" it tears me up thinking of my long-gone favorite aunt and long-gone Eva Cassidy.

Let's not forget Laura Nyro, who I am just getting into, although I'm late to the party. Amazing singer and songwriter, and wrote hits for so many others. Her music is timeless.

Unless you grew up in Bowie Maryland or regularly attended shows at jazz/blues clubs in the DC area, you wouldn’t have heard of her….until a freak occurrence when a DJ in London happened upon her cd Songbird, played a tune on the air, was floored by calls and e-mails asking for more….and it took off from there. It literally took Eva’s cd posthumously knocking THE BEATLES (best of collection called #1’s) from the #1 spot in the UK charts, for people anywhere outside of my regional area to have ever heard of her! Much like the 2nd British wave did w/ old blues artists, it took the Brits to teach the US about our own music!! It really is a fairytale ending for such a sad story. Suffice to say, that Mural of Eva would not be there today if not for a DJ in England. Eva would still be admired by all that either knew her or was fortunate enough to witness a performance…but that would have likely been the extent of it.

And in all honesty, I was actually expecting at least one response saying "shame the mural didn't have the Guild headstock on it!" To which I was going to reply, "I guess it's a cult afterall!" :p

Thanks for the back story, very interesting local history. Glad England took notice -- oh, wait, this wasn't the first time the British recognized something in American music that needed to be recognized (e.g. Hendrix, Blues, etc.)

She's the best ever. Just the best. And I hate it when you realize the greatness of something, because you don't have it any more.

A breathtaking singer. And her playing doesn't get mentioned nearly enough, nor her compositional skills. She makes every song sound like she owns it. I remember the first time I heard "Kathy's Song" on Pandora in 2002 and was stopped in my tracks. "Who is that?"

Nice to read about the mural - thanks for sharing that.
