Kids's a good player, but he lost me at Stairway To Heaven...

But why? Is this some kind of general "the song that shalt not be played" aversion? :p or do you disagree with it substantially?

ruedi, there are songs for all of us (different ones) that are not necessarily bad songs and in fact some are good songs, and even great songs, but we've heard them enough for one lifetime and we don't need to hear them again. Ever. That must be one of Bill's songs and I must admit it's one of mine too. It's great, and I'm done with it..... make sense??

When working at James Berns Music Store way back then - almost daily : "Sir - can we try some guitars?" - "Sure." - after a minute - Stairway to heaven mutilated . . .

Remember the movie "Wayne's World," and the sign in the music store "NO Stairway To Heaven" ?? I put that up in my basement, not for my son, but for his friends.

In short, I am a 'geezer, I appreciate greatly that the electric break in this song is done on a Telecaster and not an LP, but it seemed to have become for all the little mini-shredders THE acoustic guitar song that shows they can play guitar. Isn't that tune passe? I will "evaluate" your playing differently, if you really need that. And if you don't know enough to turn down your amp when this old guy comes into Guitar Center with $$$ in his pocket to maybe actually buy something, yeah you are a mini-shredder. No matter how good, you are a poser. Hope you get all those chicks you were looking for.

And...strangely enough...you get almost the same thing at bluegrass camps where the "young guns" have to play a million-notes-an-hour to show how good they are. There, I am a lot more laid back. Lack of maturity. And the teachers show them that. But...

ENOUGH! I am done! Very sorry for the rant...

BUT...Pascal, play me anything and I will still be in awe. Your loyal disciple,

BIll A.

Hotel California anyone?? LMAO!!! ruedi, I'm sure you have some songs that are amazing, but you never want to hear them again, right? o_O

ok ok 😅 I seem to have woken up a sleeping bear here... The tale of the "forbidden riff"... To me it's completely understandable when guitar store guys get annoyed with it, though at the same time I think it's a bit of a snobbish attitude?

To me, a good song always remains a good song, and I like to listen to it once in a while. And when someone comes around and plays it decently, I am entertained. Just my unpopular opinion...

Ruedi, don't worry, this bear is kind of embarrassed in his response. I think you had to grow up with the song...and maybe grow out of it, to understand.

As I said, kid is a good player...but obviously sitting in a guitar store ;)

And by the way, I married that young lady, only she is blonde and Finnish...:);)
though she probably knows more about acoustic guitars and flatpicking now...

What! No love for the sound of that Guild right off the showroom floor!!!!??:unsure: Especially since I'll bet it wasn't intricately mic-ed and processed. Damn nice sounding guitar! (This still is a guild forum,no?).

Bob, be they American-made or from the "Pacific Rim," they absolutely throttle anything else...sorry Mr Taylor...Mr. Martin, sorry just not your bag (but cut off the headstock and you have a great dread, right Sandy?)

Would have liked to hear the second player on a Guild 12...

No that guitar was amazing and he played well!! I have a few songs to ad once I get home. We are actually out for the first time in almost 2 months. Sipping wine for dessert!! This is so nice being away from the house......

As we were sitting and eating and drinking (every third table is open!!) and we're all masked and gloved up they played:
House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
Piano Man - Billy Joel
and... Somewhere over the Rainbow - by that hawaiian guy.
Nope... .not on my dime.

However I give big props for playing: Year of the Cat - Al Stewart!!

C'mon peoples, post your favorite gripes for songs you don't want to hear again. It's good clean fun......

Reudi..... now don't go calling snobbish. Not nice. These are preferences. You have some, I assume? And I'll defend your right to have them. But just because someone doesn't agree with you, doesn't make them a snob. So now, tell me what songs get on your nerves, my friend. I know you have them, everyone does!! So pick a couple and share.... I promise not to call you a snob or anything!!!:D:p:ROFLMAO::LOL:

I went back and looked at some of the player's YouTube pieces, and I do him a disservice with "kid's a good player." Let's notch that up
to excellent player and accompianist. Not sitting in a store, must be a home studio. Wish he had cranked up that Ric 660 sitting on the wall. He plays with precision, not a lot of florish or theatrics, a major thing all by itself! Easily could (or does) play back of stage, letting singer take spotlight, not calling attention to himself...except for us muso's riding on every chord change and nuance.

That said, "STH" still raises the hairs on the back of my neck!

I could list songs I don't need to hear again, but I do have a comment. Hotel California (Eagles) was over played to the point that if any Eagles song cam on I would do the equivalent of changing the channel. Maybe 20 years later Lying Eyes cam on and my choice was listen or no music, so I listened. I realized that whatever faults the Eagles had, someone knew how to tersely tell a story with the lyrics. So I still don't seek out the Eagles but I will pay attention when they pop up.

I'm sorry to admit this, but for me that song is Sweet Caroline. Not because I have anything against Neil Diamond's music or over-saturation, but I used to play in a band with a keyboard player that would bring that song out as his "go-to" and he just did a godawful version (like a parody) that I detested so much, it ruined the song for me.
