Now, if you were to try to pick a Guild that had this sort of thing going on, what would it be? Single coils, it looks like. The look reminds me of Dynasonics. Here is the spec page for this $6000 instument.

That guitar is closer to Gretsch than Guild since it has trestle bracing in a small, hollow format. I'd say something in the Nightbird family since it is a small, hollow, mahogany body w/maple top, and has a block under the bridge (sorta kinda like trestle bracing, but not really). But the Nightbirds don't have single coil pickups.

The antiqued sunburst version definitely looks nice, but a $6,000 price tag is pretty steep...

An early 60's M-75 like you can also find in Hans book:

Or certainly the lower cost option (1/10th of the price of the Collings) in the form of a DeArmond M-75T:

Julian Lage is great. Been a star since like age 8. A true virtuoso and prodigy. I like this stuff with that bluegrass player, Chris Eleridge something.
they are a great match.

Lage plays many guitars and I know he has his own trio, but the work I like best is when he is on his old vintage Martin 00018. he swears by D'A EJ16s too, which I find rather pedestrian for such an accomplished talent. But that is just me being a dumbass. Glenn swears by EJ17s after all....

when once asked about his string choice, he goes, "well, what else does one really need in a string than these?"

I guess I‘ll stay with my M-75. The collings wouldn‘t make me a better player anyway. 1621343429626.png

Yeah but you’re one who doesn’t need to be better! I guess the “a better guitar will make me a better player” thing is pretty universal, huh.

Thanks but hmm no, I'm always working on a better me...even on guitar and bass.

And a better guitar definately can make you a better player, if it is more inspiring and supporting than your others...

Yeah I get it. I didn’t think that was a real thing until I outgrew a camera I used for years. When I upgraded to a pro rig my creativity just exploded. I’d never even realized that the gear was holding me back until the gear was no longer a limitation.

That’s never happened to me with guitar but then I write about them more than play them any more. :)

" Something in the Nghtbird family " isn't solidly in the budget family I like. I desire one, but they are out of my " Heck yeah. I'll hit buy! " comfort range. I have a NS X-175 or two, with P-90 like pickups, which I like, with flatwounds. A real SR4 with humbuckers. I wonder what a SF4 body with P-90s or something would do. It has a sound block down the middle, right?

Videos of good guitars handled by great players, with probably expensive amps give me GAS.

If you want a less expensive option look for a Blues-90 and change out the pickups for something that isn't so awful-hot like the stock ones.

Every now and then you can find one for a great price. I have two of them (red and green) and paid $800 for each of them.

They have positively huge necks but they're chambered so you'll get that Nightbird vibe without the Nightbird price.

@JohnW63 , check those DeArmonds by Guild, either the M-75 with harp tailpiece and Goldtone humbuckers or the M-75T with bigsby and Model 2000 pickups. They both show up often and in various colors and are really affordable.

I've got a 1999 David Grisman CD called Dawg Duos, and Julian Lage is doing one of the cuts with Grisman at the age of eleven. The liner notes say he started playing when he was five, and by seven, he was performing with jazz & blues artists throughout the San Francisco Bay area. At the time of the CD in '99, he already had his own quartet, and had been the subject of a 1997 documentary called "Jules at Eight."

I know he had and still has his vintage 000-18 Martin. Not sure when he switched to Collings. No doubt they made him a great offer he couldn’t refuse. No doubt Collings sound better than his old Martin.

+1. A better guitar can also make you WANT to play better, which can certainly lead to inspiration. And if it simply increases your enjoyment while playing, it is worth it.
