Love it in black!

walrus

Black being pretty much "the" color - or value as my color and design class instructor would say - of Les Paul Customs from their inception. In 1974, Gibson released aniversary models in White - now yellow - and Wine Red, which makes me personally nauseous, but Black overwhelmingly remains the "traditional" color of the Les Paul Custom, a truly magnificent instrument.

At one point during my LP collecting/playing days, I had a Les Paul Custom with very very visible two piece flametop rippling with striated grain under the Black lacquer finish.

Outside of the 50's, the carve on these 1990's models is absolutely gorgeous.

Faulty memories possibly engaging here, but I seem to recollect that the latter day Historic Flametop guru Tom Murphy was new at Gibson then and was responsible for the gorgeous hand carve in these tops.

Another very neat detail from Gibson at this time was the return of the very lovely ABR-1 "wire" type Tune-O-Matic bridge (made by Schaller Germany), as opposed to the uglier blockier Nashville TOM.

Also, as can be seen, big fat frets instead of the "fretless wonder" frets from the 70's and 80's.

Bigger frets = bigger tone.

Talking about the weight - are there any "x-ray pics" of Les Paul - it just so happens, that while on Airport the other day - The Songbird wasn't the only bird . . . 🥁 🥁 🥁

Thank you all! This guitar is special, I can feel it already. It's like that with my guitars: either I feel connected to them from the very beginning and can then deepen and evolve the relationship, or I'm not going to keep them for long..

I once had a nice Gibson LP Classic, there was nothing wrong with it, but I just never bond with it. Hard to describe, it really is a feel thing.

Anyways, this one here has it all. It looks sexy as hell, playability is superb! I really dig the neck of it.

You can tell it has been played, but it still is in very good shape for it's age. Frets are still original, you can tell by the binding. Here is a detail:

I have played it today only unplugged, it already sounds huge and has lots of sustain. Tomorrow I will play one more hour or so unplugged to get to know it, then plug it in and crank it up. Looking forward to it!

Yes it is heavy, around 10 pounds, I have not weighed it myself yet. Not so long ago I promised myself not to buy any more heavy guitars, but you know... I just couldn't say no to this. Price was fair. Only one owner before me, and I could go and check it out before I bought it.

Playing electric unplugged is absolutely The Best way to find out if it is any good. Swapping pickups and tuning other electric components is no-brainer - if it feels and sound good without amp - you're winner.

Again - GRATULIERE

p.s. the other bird . . . . since you asked - I just may have to add some new pics on That Other Thread 🐾
