Very nice, congrats! Don't see sunburst on those all that often.

I have the same year, same model and same burst (my favorite). Put a K&K mini in there and use it as my back-up/open mic/general purpose workhorse. Fantastic guitar - congrats!

Well, the guy doing the sunbursts at Guild was certainly consistent around that time. In 1979 or ‘80, I ordered a new F-40 in sunburst, because I couldn’t find one anywhere locally - and I’d mentally turned it into my dream guitar. Expecting a very light iced-tea type of burst as shown in the catalog, when my guitar arrived, it had a similarly dark burst (see old Polaroid below). My heart was set on the light burst, so I never bonded with the guitar & eventually traded it for a 1970 00-18 Martin, which I played for over twenty years. Essentially, it all worked out okay in the long run!

Hey, Bob, just out of curiosity, what is the background of the shot of that F-40? Do you remember? I'm thinking linoleum floor but I don't see any outline of tiles. Maybe just a large table? Yeah, I'm more a fan of the lighter 'bursts myself.

That hardly looks like it's bursting. Just looks like 2 colors. I would expect a more gradual change from the center to the edge. I like dark bursts but that one's not for me.

Charlie, it was our first house, and my wife actually chose that carpet!

Yes, very cool, I do see similarity in the style of burst. Too bad this one doesn't seem to have the two colors blending as 7guilds points out, and runout wasn't covered up by it.

To me it almost feels like I'm playing a black guitar when I look down at this D25, and I just love how the pickguard seems blended into that darkness. I generally like the 3TSB finishes too, but sometimes on acoustic's there's too much orange, not enough black, so this 'tobacco burst' as some call it appeals to me more. Certainly for me with acoustics in as far as bursts go, electrics are fine either 2 or 3 color.

That does look pretty, thanks for sharing! I especially like the lighter streak running through your fretboard too, I have to say these are great looking guitars (y) Speaking of the neck, I really like the neck on mine, it seems slimmer than my D46, closer to my Martin DM. Part of the reason I wanted one, to compare to the DM, being they are same in tone woods, spruce tops, laminated hog b&s, difference of course the arch back. Sound wise, it’s really different compared to my DM, it definitely rings longer and it’s just so boomy. I need to do more compare and contrast, but playability wise they are very similar in feel. The DM might be a bit lighter.

It's a beauty, Boneman. I have a 1983 D25 with the same dark burst. It's been my only acoustic for almost 40 years.

After a while you need to come to grips with the fact you can't have them all. As far as finishes, I've taken what comes. Gotta love that burst though. I almost bid on the Gryphon 71 D 40 yesterday. It was $780 I think, with hours to go, but then, how different could it be to my 70 D 35? My problem is I can't sell them. If you are a buyer, you need to be a seller. Love you guys with one guitar for forty years. I had one only for 25, and had it been a dread, I'd likely still have it. But I would not have my Guild or Epiphone either.

To my ears, Brick, and I still find this shocking...I have noticed a big enough tonal difference between the D35 and the D40. Maybe it was the era or decade, but of the 3 D35s I have owned and given away, none sounded like a Hoboken or Westerly D40. They lacked the power and depth the D40 has. And it was a noticeable difference to me. I cannot explain it, as I always thought the D35 was a no frills D40, but there has to be something different in the build, somewhere.

Thanks, yea then you know too :). I love this one, in fact I already have friends clamoring for it too, sell it to me! I had only one acoustic for 30 years, my old Fender given to me as a Xmas gift, and I still have it. I riffed mainly on electrics though, then couple years ago I really started getting back into acoustic playing. Alas, I wanted another tone the Fender wasn’t giving and the search began. Of course when subsequently joining this forum I somehow got the itch for another and another and so on. I feel I’m all set for now though, so long as I stay off CL and Reverb! Hah. Between this and the D46 I am satisfied, all the others are a luxury.

That’s my problem, too. I hate the process of selling stuff, so therefore I’ve happily reached the point of having 30 guitars, 3 mandolins, and numerous amps. Now truth be told, I’ve traded away many guitars in the past fifty years (with a few regrets) and have done multi-instrument deals to get something I desperately wanted. And even today, I could easily do that if a “must have” ever again gets under my OCD skin. But I’ve put a lot of time into covering pretty much every acoustic & electric category I’ve ever had an interest in, and I now find myself not looking to buy anything. It’s a rather strange, but quite satisfying feeling!

I totally get that, I have a hard time selling stuff too, but when push comes to shove I’m your sales guy! Heh but I hear you, although I’m not at 30 plus instruments, I thought I’d want one of everything and now that I’m at 10 I first wonder how that happened and then I wonder if it’s too much for one person. Truth is two or three worked fine for years, so of course maybe 5 or 6 would be enough. For sure 10+ is almost too many if you just play at home like me. But I like my new options :ROFLMAO:. Only downside is the regret from several having to sit in their cases while the others get played. And maybe deciding which ones to grab if a wildfire sweeps through!
