My hunt is officially over. The Black D-25 I've been looking for arrived today and I must say I'm very stoked! She is in wonderful shape and while I wouldn't say I got the "best deal ever" price-wise, I'm happy. No cracks or major problems. Fine action and very decent frets. Not bad at all for a guitar that's 43. She'll be playable for years to come without the need of luthier intervention (hopefully). Most importantly she sounds great! Exactly the sound I was looking for and a great compliment to my Martin 0-15m.

Here's a pic, plus one with my Starfire! IMG_2293.jpgIMG_2294.jpg

What does the label say in the soundhole, Ongo... Is it a music store or prior owner's label? Just curious. I assume that has nothing to do with Guild, right?

Correct, it is a music store label. "Drischoll's Music INC". My guess is it is the label of the original store that sold the guitar new. A quick Google search didn't come back with much, but there was an indication the store closed up shop in 1984.

I found a Driscoll's Music that closed in 2014 but if the "h" is in the label...

Funny, there actually isn't an "h". I must have typed that by mistake...lol

However, I believe the Driscoll's you are referencing was in Ohio. Mine was in California, which is what the label indicates.

I LOVE black guitars! Black is really just about the only color finish I like. Other than natural/clear finish. I try to mostly buy black gear in general. That limitation helps to curb the spending...lol.

No problem. Sometimes a guitar presents a mini-mystery and sometimes it is fun to try and solve it.

For example someone posted an equipment ad from the 70's that had a list of maybe 10 authorized dealers. Someone then wondered how many of those dealers were still in business and we were off. I remember that because one of the dealers was the go to shop when I was young although in those days I was buying valve oil and not strings.

That's one of my favorite things about buying older guitars.

Yes, when you have black guitars you need a good supply of quality polishing cloths to keep those fingerprints away. :)
If you love Italian food make sure that you eat the 'real Italian' stuff instead of the 'American Italian' variety; it will surely help to keep the fingerprints to a minimum! Obviously, cleaning your hands after dinner may help as well!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

I had to Google Ongo Gablogian... very funny video clip from Always Sunny in Philadelphia. And now I recognize Danny DeVito. That show was one of my favorite TV shows. Those guys were hilarious! Oh, and by the way, the black D-25 is gorgeous!
