I recently bought my first Guild. I've been eyeing it for about a year in a pawn shop near my work, but could never find any information on the model. I decided to pull the trigger, and bought it on Tuesday. Now that I have it home, I'm not sure I'm completely sold on it. Anyway, if you could give me any information on the model and materials used, I would greatly appreciate it. The model number says D-100 and the serial number is D-10089027. Here are some photos:

That isn't a Guild. Wrong peghead, pickgard, wrong trussrod. Not a single Guild part in that Guitar.

That sucks. If you could get a refund, for that kind of money you could get a nice second-hand GAD series. Not American-made, but at least not a counterfeit...

Welcome to the forum. Sorry you got burned.

Guilds before 2005 had the serial number stamped on the back of the headstock, and Guilds from all eras should have a sticker inside of the sound hole, designating the model, serial number and (generally) the place of manufacture, although those made circa 1970-75 or so simply say "Made in USA", even though they were all made in Westerly, RI during that time.

I do have one Guild (an arch-back dreadnought D-212) that is missing its label, but you can still see the oval shadow where it used to be. It does have the serial number on the headstock, so it's all good.

I'd suggest that you print out this thread, take it to the pawn shop and insist on a refund. If they balk, suggest to them that the Better Business Bureau might be interested in hearing about merchants that are selling counterfeit goods.

And when you are ready to start looking for a real Guild, feel free to post a few photos of it for us to take a look at before you put your money down. Between the lot of us, we can tell you exactly what it is, where it was made, and when. And chances are more than one LTG member owns one and can tell you all about it. There is also a FS/FT section of the forum where you can buy with confidence from other LTG members. I have bought and sold several Guilds this way.

Yeah, we are VERY good at that. (But, you're usually happy with what you get.)

And don't fret about being fooled. Everyone learns sometime. Knowledge is power! If you're still interested in Guilds we recommend Hans Moust's The Guild Guitar book. Then you can "pick up your guitar and play, just like yesterday. And you'll get on your knees and say....."

If that was a real Guild D100, you would definitely be "completely sold on it"...

I agree with those who say to return it.

Sorry to hear about this. I saw the title of the thread and then when the photos opened, I went, "Oh no....". See if you can return it. You have a legit reason to do so. At least you can try. Welcome to LTG. Next time post some photos before you buy and we can be more help...... :apologetic:

Welcome aboard, sorry you're here under such frustrating circumstances.
Counterfeiting's a problem we've discussed several times, and it seems Texas was a hotspot and pawnshops are targets.
Take a look at this thread:
http://www.letstalkguild.com/ltg/showthread.php?169766-Sellers-of-counterfeit-Guilds
You'd expect a pawnshop to vet what they're buying, but if the price is cheap enough and a price guide with no pictures tells 'em they could make a killing, well, they could get taken in too or at least not look too hard. And a D-100's a top-of-the-line Guild worth a couple grand easy..
BUT...if you see the name of the shop you bought it from there, those guys have been advised by us about how to recognize counterfeit Guilds and would no longer be able to use ignorance as an excuse.
Still, if you approach them with a sympathetic attitude of understanduing that that they may have been taken in themselves, they may be more willing to take it back. At least it allows 'em to save face, if you get my drift...
Good Luck!

You guys have been more than welcoming and thanks for the helpful insights. I didn't expect it to be a top of the line D-100, but I was naive. Thanks guys!
