So, I was sitting around last week going over my guitars and feeling like a lucky kinda guy when it struck me that something was missing here. Although I do have enough Mahogany guitars I didn't really have a Jumbo Mahogany. I guess I still don't but although this 1975 G 41 has the classic Dreadnaught shape it plays and sounds like a Jumbo with that 17" lower bout.

I'd owned a couple Orpheum Jumbos which were superb and a F 48 but all got sold to fund other purchases or to pay for Vet bills. But now, I have a large bodied Mahogany Guild back in the stable. I can tell you that the sound is nothing short of huge (I'd forgotten how huge) but not at all muddy, at least to my ears. It has really fine balance across all the tonal regions. I was worried about the neck angle but it seems to be really good and has plenty of saddle height available. I see no evidence of a past reset but it won't need one any time soon. Just a big, rich sound even with what I suspect are Light gauge strings which will be swapped out for Mediums at the next string change. It likely hadn't been played in quite a while. There was a healthy build up of dust everywhere but I don't mind that. Mine get dusty too when they sit out. I'll wipe them down once in a while but it's certainly no show stopper for me.

It does have lotsa very cool finish checking on the soundboard and even the back and sides but checking on some guitars doesn't bother me one bit, in fact I think it just adds to the coolness of an older, vintage guitar. This is one such guitar.

Anyhow, I'm gushing a bit so will stop now. here's a few pics of the "Big Motha".

Nice! The only Guild I regret selling (trading actually) is my old G41.

Never seen the build date stamped on the back brace before.

Didn't even notice that yet. I don't see much or buy much anymore on Ebay. Reverb has pretty much taken that market over but every once in a while a nice instrument will show up.

Richard:
Just a for gorgious guitar that stands "tall" in any lineup. That one will tickle your belly.
Congrats on another rare one.

Tall in the saddle, and I see what you mean about the checking on this one.

Great Score Richard!! These seem like a really cool guild. I wonder if guild sold it with a jumbo body guild case(like in the picture), or would they have ordered a special 17inch dreadnought hard case?

Mine was bought from the original owner and came in what he said was the original case, which was a jumbo.

Not many G41s come up for sale, but of the few that have, none that I've seen came with a specially made 17" dread case.

Not sure how to tell the difference but the OHSC it came in fits it about perfectly.

The catalogs and price lists will give you the answer. The G-41 case was the 2517 case, same as for F-212XL, F-412 and F-512.

Man, I can't seem to put this thing down. I have plenty of guitars that cost more and are deemed to be more valuable but this guitar is pretty outstanding. Again, a huge voice but not at all muddy and the sustain goes on for what seems to be an eternity. No electronics and I have no intention of adding any. Unless you're playing live and maybe even then, it doesn't seem to me to need any amplification.

You've all heard me say I'm not a great player and that for sure is true. But, I do love playing. I'm a pretty aggressive rhythm player and you can attack this beast in a really aggressive way and it responds beautifully. And to make it even better for me, I love and I mean love the finish checking on this one. It just fits the beast and looks right, at least to my eyes.

I realize because of its larger size and scale length it's not a guitar for everybody but for those of you who can deal with that I highly recommend you check one out at some point.

I can count this purchase up as a winner

I owned a G-41 and loved the sound, but not the scale length. There was just too much space between the frets.

save for my right shoulder woes, this would have been a great Guild model for me. 6 feet 4 inches tall....and I am a strummer!

Wow Richard, a 17 in dread? Impressive. I need to go take some ibuprofen just looking at the pictures.

Amplification? I don’t need no stinkin’ amplification!

There is a video on YouTube of a guy playing a G-41. He's a restorer of guitars. Always plays'em on his couch.

Here's another one:
