The rosewood of my new F512 is very dark (finished and unfinished sides) as compared to other rosewood guitars I own (Martins). In the specs Guild list the back and sides as "rosewood". I assume the rosewood is east Indian rosewood. No doubt there are lots of variations in color of east Indian rosewood. It is a very impressive guitar.

I'd hope that if CMG has changed any of the wood types on the traditional models that they'd call it out. But I wouldn't be 100% certain. Almost certainly, your F-512 is made from Indian rosewood, Bud.

There were times in New Hartford, for example, when alternate forms of mahogany were (I think) ultimately used for some of the exported guitars to Europe because of quarantine problems. I *don't* know if those guitars were marked as such.

I feel certain the wood is a rosewood by the appearance. Just a darker shade. F512 on left, Martin HD28 on right. I have a Martin 00028 the same shade as the HD28.

Oh, it's definitely rosewood, Bud. The color difference might be the wood itself or might be the pore filler that is used by the paint shop.

Does Guild, or anyone, darken rosewood when spraying?

Wikipedia list more than 20 varieties of rosewood. The Wood Database describes the color of east Indian rosewood as: "East Indian Rosewood can vary from a golden brown to a deep purplish brown, with darker brown streaks. The wood darkens with age, usually becoming a deep brown."

Ralph, it depends on the pore filler that the shop is using before applying the lacquer. As Bud quoted, there's a fairly wide range of light/dark when it comes to rosewoods.

The rosewood of my new F512 is very dark....

Seeing the photo now, that's about the same as my Oxnard F512. It's not light, but I wouldn't call it dark either, depending on the lighting. I'd call it about medium. Of course, I don't have any Martins to compare it to....
