Glad you're satisfied and hope you bond with it. This thread has given me G.A.S. for one now. I think full-size jumbos (17") work best with flat backs and the F-40 has that going for it.

It definitely took a few months of playing for my F40T to open up. Enjoy!

I played an SJ200 new in store a while ago, it was truly the quietest full size (dread or jumbo) guitar I've ever played that was without a pick.

Quick update: I participated in a gathering of 7 or 8 musicians last night. I got to play the F40 in that setting and also got to hear other participants play it. Based on all of that, I think it's a keeper.
That's great news Jeff!

Tundra had another 15% off sale, and I was sorely tempted by a sunburst model, but I managed to resist. I know you said it's kind of quiet, which is odd. The D40 traditional that I got from them is loud as hell, light, and super resonant. I would have expected the F40 to be the same. I do know that dreads tend to be a little louder than jumbos, though.

I’ve been wanting one if these F40s, but the only one around here is not a traditional. Any opinions on the difference between the traditional and the non-traditional? Is bolt on neck vs. mortise tenon neck a big deal? I hope to play the regular next week, but I have nothing to compare it to.

There's very little of any use that we can give you comparison-wise, valleyguy. Oxnard's F-40 is a jumbo body and can't be compared with "traditional" F-40s of the past.

Having said that, I don't think we've heard any issues of build quality so I imagine the Oxnard F-40s are similar sounding to each other.

The questions you ask are probably issues of long-term value and resale, and honestly I wouldn't even predict if those differences will matter in the years ahead.

I don't have experience with Oxnard Traditionals vs. Standards. I do, however, have both a NH D50 Standard and a NH D50 Traditional. They sound vastly different. But I think much of the difference there comes from the use of an Adirondack spruce top vs. a Sitka spruce top (the D50 Traditional is louder and more aggressive-sounding). The Oxnard D40 Traditional has a Sitka top, though, just like the standard. I'm sure there are sonic differences, but I'd expect them to be modest. And I don't think that the difference between a tortoise and tenon neck and a dovetail neck would be that substantial. I have a Martin 000-MMV (mortise and tenon neck) that sounds very good, and Collings some how seems to get by with mortoise and tenon necks.

That is probably correct. Mrs. Fro. and a number of LTG friends played a NH F30 Traditional and an F30 Standard side by side in New Hartford and no one noticed any sonic differences worth commenting about. So I'm willing to extrapolate that your observation is driven by different models and not just Traditional vs. Standard, as those designations applied to NH production.

I got to play one today and pulled the trigger on a standard F40. Only comparison I could make was to a F55, a vastly different sounding guitar, like comparing a chorus of angels to a trio of angels. Since I own a d55 and D50, I was happy with the mahogany sound I was looking for.

I’ll write a separate post with a more detailed review once I spend a few days with it.
