This one popped on Reverb and I immediately snapped it up. Hopefully, not a lot of major work required besides the neck reset. It's being sent directly to Tom Jacobs so I can avoid dupicate shipping charges.

I've owned several of these over the years and they are quite nice.

That's more than a neck reset. The neck block has shifted on that and the neck and block are being pulled into the sound hole. I'm pretty sure the top has to come off to properly repair this damage. Those are super nice guitars. I like the herringbone rosette! Good luck, Richard!! (y)

What in your opinion would cause this? Drop, factory defect, extreme temp exposure?

Well, I'm hoping it isn't all that. I have a pretty good feeling this may work out o.k. but I'm typically wrong more often than I'm right. We shall see. Either way, I'll let ya'll know once Tom gets it in his hands.

in Frank Ford's opinion, these sorts of cracks are typically caused by exposure to excess temperatures... as might be experienced being left in a car on a hot day.

Here is an example of one of his repairs, done w/o removing the back....

Here's another... not as extreme.

I'm sure Tom can fix it, does not look so good...that's quite a shift.
But I love the general look of the guitar, especially the herringbone! The price was right at least for this guitar.
I don't think the top has to come off, once the neck is removed you can do a lot through the soundhole and neckblock area. Ask Tom to document the repair a bit for us!

Hey Rich, as has been addressed above, it's usually extreme temperature, a.k.a. HEAT. Most likely the guitar was left in the trunk of a car and the glue has just let go.

Dave, thanks for the Frank Ford links to his repairs. But it seems that he's relying on the top bracing alone to stand up to the relentless pull of the strings. Maybe he's already determined that the neck block in these cases is good and that the neck has just pulled forward. Not sure. I'll go scour his site and see if he says more about this. Either way, I'm sure Tom Jacobs can repair this. He's amazing!!

Even if it takes a grand to repair it, you still got a great deal!

It can be fixed and shouldn't require the removal of top or back. My D50 Brazilian had exactly the same problem. Guild in New Hartford fixed it. They had to remove the neck in order to reseat the neck block, and they did a neck reset at the same time.

They also replaced the bridge, which had been sanded, and repaired a couple back cracks.

It was whole new animal when I got it back. The job ran me about 1100 bucks.

Well for $500 I think the potential upside is there if the work is not to labor intensive / costly. Dice worth rolling. Its a beaut Rich and I hope the repairs needed are minimal. If you come out of this under $1k you are ahead of the game in my book.

I went to the Westerly website that was posted in my OP and there is not even a dv-62 shown. Obviously they were made. Any sources that show detailed info on this model?

Good find Richard.
Tom has a DV72 and now a DV62 of yours. You might as well be on the lookout for a DV52 to send him!

It's like a DV PARTY!!! I love these guitars, I really do. Not trashing anything. For that price he's gonna end up with a seriously nice guitar!! Honestly, if another DV showed up here in Vegas, I'd mortgage the house to .... no I'd just buy it if it was okay. My 72 is AH-MAZING!!(y)

No no, I meant to say you have a DV72 at Tom's, presently, and just sent the DV62, you just bought directly to Tom. Just made me think of a DV52 to complete the triple. And I would say you see more clearly through your fog than I.
