NGD: Doyle Dykes DD6 MCE

This one has been high on my want list for a while now. It was quite unexpected. It popped up about a month ago. I contacted the seller with questions but it was sold almost immediately. A couple weeks ago he contacted me that the sale fell through. Long story short, as GAD would say.... "Mine".

Having owned a tiger maple Gibson ES-347 for a long time I missed the beauty of a nice maple guitar. The wood that New Hartford chose for this run is nothing short of amazing. The workmanship is second to none. The beautiful quilt, perfect top, ebony fretboard and bridge, abalone, unique fret markers… all terrific. The golden color tone on the top is really warm and pleasing to look at. I love the 1.80 neck width and slim profile - so easy to play. And who doesn’t love that Florentine cutaway? The neck angle is great with a low action. There was quite a lot of buzzing when I got it, but it was also dead flat, so a quick tweak of the truss rod and it is now perfect. Perhaps that’s why the deal fell through – who knows?

The tone is pure maple - more prominent on the high and mids than lows as you would expect. The string-to-string balance is very good. She rings like a bell and has nice sustain. It is a MUCH better guitar than I am a player that is without a doubt.

There really isn’t anything bad I can say about this guitar. It is very nice to have maple in the mix again - and with a wide neck! Now to find the rosewood version…

I think these are great guitars. I loved mine so much I got a DD-12MCE to go with it. Looks like yours has the LB6 pickup. Mine has the Barbara pickup.
Wait till you plug it in. It adds a whole new dimension. I play mine unplugged mostly.

Thanks all. I do consider myself very, very fortunate to have such wonderful guitars. Not one dog in the bunch, all superb, but this one like the F47 does stand out.

I just can’t comfortably play all those world class jumbo’s and thinner neck beauties any longer. This DD is a grail Guild for me. Perfect really in what I desire from a guitar these days - size, neck width, ebony, responsiveness, tone, and a certain finesse.

I’m not a fingerstyle player but am trying to learn and this one just begs to be played. New Hartford really hit a home run, rather a grand slam with this model. I don’t expect to be letting it go willingly while I can still play.

Love the little inlay treatment south of the bridge pins, and the quilted-maple back is stunning.

Congrats & Enjoy!

Tom,
It's satisfying to know that there are other LTGers who have a "romantic" relationship with their guitar(s) than myself!

Try GHS Doyle Dykes Signature Series Phosphor Bronze 11 1/2 strings on her. (DD S325). They sound great on mine.
DD guitars were under the radar for a while. Picked up mine for less than other comparable Guild models. Sure cure for GAS. I didn't realize the impact of the wider nut until I started playing more fingerstyle on it. It is hard to switch back to the narrower neck on my D-40. Doyle's old reviews of the guitar are still on YOUTUBE. Wren wanted them to be the best Guilds.

The GHS Doyle Dykes series strings, along with the Laurence Juber and David Gilmour (on the electric guitar side) are not longer being made, although they may still be available from various sources. GHS seems to have gotten rid of their artist endorsed strings generally (from looking at their web site). I have no idea what they did on the electric guitar side, but on the acoustic guitar side, they are now called American series. I think the Doyle Dykes strings had an odd size, .095" high E if I remember correctly. The Americana series is standard gauges, .010"/.011"/.012"/etc. no half steps.

They are hidden on the GHS site under Doyle Dykes https://www.ghsstrings.com/products/12596-doyle-dykes-signature/options/11644-doyle-dykes-light

DD S325 are also under phosphor bronze. Also jeff george and David Gilmour are under Boomers. The Laurenc Juber Signature Bronze have been replaced by the Americana series. all availabe at juststrings.com as well. GHS changed their website so they are not easy to find.

Out of curiosity does anyone know how many DD6-MC and -RC models where produced?
I tried a LTG and Google search, but am not finding anything.
