I just got this today. Ordered from GC two days ago. Gave it a quick inspection and play. My overall impression is mixed.

Likes:

The very first thing you notice taking it out of the box is how insanely light this is. I guess this is also a dislike. On my bathroom scale it is about 3.8-4.0 libs.

The guitar is well made, with no obvious flaws in the finished product. Fit and finish is all good.

Out of the box it plays pretty easily, especially for me with the 1-3/4 nut width. Love that. The neck is comfortable, frets fine.

Inexpensive looking open back tuners but they stayed in tune for me through normal non-agressive strumming and picking. No complaints.

The notes are clear and the guitar is responsive for strumming, picking and fingerpicking.

For a dread it is slightly thin with a 15-3/4 x 4-5/8 lower bout. Comfortable for someone like me who prefers smaller than dread size guitars

It has enough volume and tons of sustain/overtones.

Dislikes:

It feels too light and paper thin to me, even compared to my NH F30’a which aren’t much heavier. It just feels like a lot of inexpensive MIC guitars I’ve tried that feel like they will break if not handled carefully. But that could just be me.

The gig bag while looking cool offers very little protection. It is pretty thin. However I am not a fan of gig bags to start with.

The tuners look a little cheap, but as noted they seem to work fine.

The sound for me has too much treble and mids, with too many overtones. It’s bright and just doesn’t seem to have much warmth to my ears. Some may like that, especially if you want to cut through, but it sounds more Taylor-like vs Guild-like to me. It’s not a tone I would listen to for a long time.

Overall
As a $399 guitar I think it’s a home run. Easy to play, made well, sounds good, cool package for Marley lovers. It’s a fun guitar. For a newer player this is a great guitar to learn on. For a more experienced player I think it could be a good backup or campfire guitar when you don’t want to worry about your primary. I think this will appeal to many players.

Pics to come…

Cool, sounds like they will sell a bunch of them! I'm surprised they used a 1 3/4" nut width on a "beginner" guitar, though. Hopefully the light weight doesn't translate into split sides ("key cracks").

Canada .... brrr
Thanks for the review. I think that a light build nowadays is considered a desirable feature and many of the younger generations are looking down on the heavy tank like builds of yesteryear. We will see if they light builds will last as long as the heavy tanks.

Yeah, I wouldn't call that a drawback, Mikey. But "too much treble and mids," (to the detriment of the bass) is a bit of a drawback. Plus, "It’s bright... sounds more Taylor-like vs Guild-like" is not what many are looking for here in Guildland. Still, your review was perfect, and for 400 bucks brand new, that's a great deal for a campfire/travel/beginner guitar that looks great!

Here in Guildland we have a certain attraction to a more typical Guild sound, if there is such a thing. That is why we are here I suppose. That is really the biggest detriment for me to this guitar. I guess I am spoiled.

However, that doesn’t mean it won’t appeal to many others looking for a good, inexpensive and thoroughly playable guitar. I put this in the same realm as some good Alvarez guitars I’ve played and enjoyed before I got hooked on the Guild sound.

You may want to keep playing it for a while. Generally, the longer you play a guitar, the more bass/mid-bass improves, especially with new guitars. There is also some improvement in the treble range as well, but it generally is overshadowed by the bass/mid-bass improvement.

Hopefully it sounds better than the cheaper Taylor fare. I'd be very happy if I didn't hear another cheap Taylor, especially plugged in.

I don’t mind the looks, finish or the TRC. It’s just not the Hog sound I’m looking for, otherwise I’d keep it. I think this will go back to GC.

I’m curious, is the TRC just ornamental? I feel like all the import Guilds have the truss rod adjustment through the sound hole.

A-yup. One of the "tells" of the GAD's and Westerly Collections is no TRC.

It's in the Westerly collection so I'm sure it is, but waiting to get Mikey'd. :D

Sorry Al, I boxed it back up to return. RaveOnEd got one as well so maybe he can confirm. It is obviously a copy of the Madeira style TRC.

I bought a guitar at a pawn shop once. Went back and forth between a Madeira jumbo and a smallish Yamaha. If I'm remembering correctly, the jumbo sounded like that surprisingly thin. I ended up with the Yamaha. I don't remember what happened to that.

Never forget a video of Marley explaining marajuana and how it shouldn’t be illegal. “It’s a plant, man!” Like pleading.

Yeah I hope this is a great move for Guild. Your review pretty sums up a lot of my guesses. Not great. Not bad. $400 and you can take it camping. I am not into signature guitars, but this might bring a few noobs to the brand.

Yeah the 1 3/4 nut threw me too GG. Odd on a beginner / intermediate dread.
