Over the weekend I got an e-mail from newbie Doug Brown, who joined our ranks on Aug. 30. He made contact with me regarding the '73 cherry S-100 Deluxe he had just acquired, and asked if I wanted to chat with him about it. So yesterday afternoon I did, and this is what he said:

Doug acquired a '73 cherry S-100 Deluxe, with original case, from the original owner for -- get this -- $500. He has dabbled in guitars and in the past owned a Charvel electric, but now plays violin. When he saw this Guild he had to buy it, although it didn't look right. A little research told him the reason why -- the Guildsby vibrato and bridge had been replaced with a tailpience off a Les Paul Standard. The guitar was also missing the truss rod cover.

Fearing it would cost nearly as much as the guitar itself to find a replacement Guildsby and truss rod cover to return his new sweet-playing and sweet-sounding guitar to original condition, the seller's wife told him to scour around the basement to see if he could find the replaced pieces. And find them he did, in a brown paper bag! The Guildsby was there, save for the screws. As for the TRC, he located one on the Internet but the seller wanted $25 for it. Doug contacted him and said the price was too high, but noticing that the seller had a handle that made it sound like he was into Cuban cigars, managed to work out a deal, sending a couple of Cubans in exchange for a period-correct truss rod cover.

With replacement parts in hand, Doug is now looking for a luthier in the Kansas area who could return his newfound treasure back to stock. If anyone has any ideas, please send a PM to Doug Brown. I told him about posting photos, and offered to post his for him because I know how anxious you guys are for photos, which is why I'm posting this and not Doug himself. I told him he deserved all the glory ... and no, Doug Brown is not a pseudonym for Thunderface. The glory is his, I am just the messenger.

Congrats Doug. You scored big, our newfound friend. :D

Note: His cherry '73 S-100 is just five serial numbers off from Matsickma's. And remember, give him the glory and the kudos. I am just the messenger.
