I almost snagged a '79 D-50 but the guy backed out.

I found a 2014 GUILD Acoustic D-50CE STD for around $800.

In the mind's of those who have maybe played old and new - are the newer D-50's worth pursuing ?

A new D50 from 2014 made in New Hartford, CT will be e top notch. New Hartford builds are highly highly prized.
Buy it yesterday if no structural problems. If you don't like something about it, put it for sale on this forum. It will be gone in a day.

Great advice. Thank you. He said the input jack needs to be replaced but other than that it sounds solid. Trying to work out the deal.

Thanks and keep us posted on D50CE deal. Will you be able to see and play it? Are you able to talk on phone with seller? Sometimes you can get a pretty good read on folks talking with them and proceed. And sometimes you get that, "Big Hat No Cattle" feeling!

I wont be able to play it. It's in austin - so i'd have to drive 3 hours.

I'd REALLY like to structure it on a half now half when it arrives basis but, he might not go for that - or he may not even respond. Who knows. My experience is when I get too excited about something, it doesn't work out.

I appreciate the enthusiasm behind this from yall and the warning's too. I dont want to get caught up in the 'if its too good to be true it is' game. We'll see if he responds and if it comes about. I'd love to get my hands on it and hope it's solid!

Does anybody know, if you have the serial #, if you can call guild and verify the authenticity of the guitar, like, say this guys name is Mark Schmidt, Can you call and verify that Mark Schmidt bought the guitar ? That might be a little too sleuthy and probably against their policies. Just trying not to get ripped off.

Never heard of any guitar company doing that. Closest Guild has come to doing that is that with a limited edition (less than 10 instruments) they confirmed that a particular dealer had received one. Even if they would do so, which has some serious privacy issues, they don't have the data to do that for anything prior to 2010 or so.

If I may, I think you are worried about things that are unlikely. If you are worried about stolen property ask a local police department. If you are worried about counterfeit you probably have a better chance of being in a car accident while picking up the instrument. Most fakes are bad enough that a couple of pictures reveal them as such. You also need to remember that you are dealing with Guilds which are not comparatively expensive. If I had the talent to make a credible fake, would I fake a $1000 Guild or a $5000 Gibson or Martin?

Get as much information as you can before making the drive but plan on making your own inspection and paying the full price when you leave with the instrument in hand. If you are concerned about your own ability to assess the instrument at pick up, let us know because we have ideas :)

If you want to feel good about this before you get in the car, get pictures and post them.

that particular model will have a cutaway.
that would cause me to pass on it.
also, i believe the D50s from NH had adi tops which to me is total overkill re overtonage. D50s are cannons even with the historical sitka tops, so for me, i would stick to that.

i also would cite the original seller's decision to take his D50 off the market as confirmation re the awesomeness of the Westerly RI D50s.

I was just curious if you could match up data - I was just asking kind of just for what if or if its possible. Im not concerned about it being the actual guitar - my worries would be, the pictures dont show everything clearly and I get it and it for instance needs a neck reset or something major.

We'll see, I messaged them earlier today and so far no response. so this may all be for naught.

Thanks for the responses guys!

For those who have \ have played D-50's

A very nice member of the community pointed out there is a 2011 D-50 Bluegrass edition for sale, They are asking $1500:

"
This Guild D-50 was made in New Hartford, CT. This is a great value for an american made acoustic featuring a solid red spruce top over a rosewood back, and sides. The Indian rosewood back and sides provides a nice complex tone.

The guitar is in excellent condition and comes with a pickup installed.

Specs

  • Top Wood - Adirondack Spruce
  • Back/Side Wood - Indian Rosewood
  • Fingerboard Wood - Ebony
  • Scale Length - 25.5"
  • Nut Width - 1 11/16"
  • Pickup(s) -
  • Case - Original Hard case
"

I have searched everywhere I possibly can, reverb, every music store that sells used guitars, etc and the prices are all over the place. It does have a couple little knicks in the side of it but seems to be pretty well put together.

Is $1500 a fair price? I was going to offer $1200 ... is that too high even?

Thank yall for your wonderful insight, I appreciate the guidance, nobody likes to find out they got screwed months later, Thankfully in my case, even if it's 9 months later, all I have is a guitar and not an 18 year commitment :)

For information about how to check the neck angle, see Frank Fords pages HERE regarding the neck angle. It's fairly easy if you have the guitar in person, and can also request photos from the seller showing what you need to know. Ask for photos of the action at the 12th fret and with a straight edge (24") to evaluate. Like Woody above, the C part of the name would make it a no go for me. I'm fine with cutaways and have a couple but I really don't like a cutaway on a dread. I think it looks bad and I'm not the only one. But if you're good with it, you're good to go. If it's in good shape and made in New Hartford for that price, it sounds like a great deal. Keep in mind not to over fuss about smaller things like price. Remember, even if you paid $200 more than maybe you should have, after you've had the guitar 10 years, that's very little money spread out over time so, it's not always as big a deal as it might seem. Good luck. Keep us posted on the deal!! :)

p.s. - a 2011 D50 Bluegrass edition is a great deal at $1200 or even higher, all depending on condition.

That is great information - Yall have taught me more in a day or 2 then I could have found in hours and hours of scouring the internet.

Thanks a lot. I might make an offer on the D50 as well as put up a WTB and see if anybody has one to sell! I have the money and its burning a hole in my safe - thank god the safe is fire proof for 30 minutes. Hey, I'm in IT - im not a comedian hahaha.

I need to take my wtb down - I ended up snagging a 2011 Excellent condition Guild D-50 Bluegrass edition. Adi over EIR. Im super excited for it!!!!

I locked it but I wonder if we need a prefix that means I found one or I'm no longer interested. Would people understand OBE for Overtaken By Events? Forgive the veer and enjoy the guitar.

What about “found” or “bought”?

Major congrats! New Hartford! You're going to have fun with that!

Thanks!!! I'm really really excited. My mailman is an old hippie, super good guitar player - so he's delivered all of my 50 some guitars (ive sold most now)

So I told him about the guild and told him when he delivers it to make sure to ring the door bell and see if im home so he can come in and play it.
