For years I've been using a peg winder attachment for a power screwdriver or drill, I think it was from D'Addario, but not sure. While changing strings last week, the screwdriver fell off my bench and the plastic shaft broke, right at the end of the collet, so time for a replacement. Found one I really like, it has a metal shaft and soft rubber gripper that's small enough it will wind my 12 strings without bumping the peg handle next to it. They also make a crank handle for it so if you don't want a power winder you can use it instead. Here's a picture:

From where? I have one of the cheap crank-style and I have to me careful with it lest I mark the side of the headstock.

Try a little stuffing in there - I've used the soft side of self adhesive velcro to line the 'cup' on my homemade power winder.

In my case the cup flops around so much on the knobs that the crank will hit the headstock unless I'm patient, and I'm not when I'm changing strings. I think I might a string winder that's designed to fit everything from soprano ukuleles to electric bass guitars.

I finally tried an electric winder and quit using it on the first attempt. It was so slow I could do two strings by hand faster than one with the winder.
I don't have a small enough drill to try the adapter pictured.
Looks like that set up would be a lot faster than the winder I got.

I've used hand cranks for some 30 or more years (and still use them from time to time). I find that it's hard to maintain a constant angle on them and easy for them to slip off the tuner buttons. (I have more trouble using them on the treble-side tuners for some reason.)

The advantage of battery powered winders (at least for me) isn't just they're faster -- though I appreciate that about them, especially when I'm changing strings on my 12-strings.

It's that they're safer to use. You can easily hold them steady at a perpendicular angle to your headstock, on either side of the headstock, so that you don't end up scratching it.

I've been using the Ernie Ball Power Peg (red-and-black version) for around a decade. Works for me.

Another plus ONE for Ernie Ball Power Peg! I had one and it disappeared. Honest! It was there one day and suddenly it was gone. So I ordered another one. I wouldn't be without it. I see the guys in videos use a power screwdriver with an attachment and that looks like it might do really well and you can change the speed of it and I like that. But until this current Power Peg disappears, I'm sticking with it!!

Glenn, I had the red and black one too!! It was great and just like this one. Then GONE!! I mean where can a string winder go? I keep thinking i'm gonna come across it but it just vanished into thin air. So now i have black and yellow/green. It works great.

Too fast is also not good as you could do potential damage to the tuner gears or fragile old plastic tuner knobs. The Ernie Ball Power Pegs run with 0-200 RPM. It's o.k. for me, it could be a tiny bit faster than 200 RPM however. The Taylor factory for instance who has to string hundreds of guitars per day doubled the speed of what they had to 400 RPM, there is an interesting 17 years old article from Frank Ford about this:

An interesting fast manual winder seems to be this one:

I lost the first EB winder to a battery leak (check those batteries). The new one has a lopsided winding action, and I feel that's no good for the tuners ( how's your action) so I'm on the hunt for another.

This new Power Peg also has the unfortunate malfunction of the trigger locking in the engaged position both forward and backward. You have to bring the strings up to pitch and be ready to pop the alternate direction trigger to stop it or pull it off the tuner knob really fast. That's fine on metal knobs but on the plastic and wooden ones it's really hard on them and they tend to shatter with such rough treatment. It pisses me off so I suppose I'm gonna have to take it apart and see what's up with the trigger...... damn!!

Ralph, mine goes lopsided winding only on the Art Deco Knobs like Glenn was complaining about!! They don't really fit in either slot very well and tend to go off to the side so they're off center and then you have to stop (with my trigger malfunction mentioned above) and then recenter it and start again. A total pain!!!

Then while looking for another type of winder in a Google search I find this: Pyle Pro Wireless Electric String Winder for Guitars & Other String Instruments. It's only $19 and it doesn't even have a description, NO reviews, and the order is non-cancellable and non-returnable!! What's up with that??

Has anyone tried this Flanger string winder, cutter, pin puller combo tool?

Yikes!! $9 for shipping and it's $32! But if it works really well, it'd be worth it.

Tom, mine is just lopsided action as you hold it in your hand and watch it wind. I might open it up and find something loose or bent. I have no other problem with it. This new one is rechargeable.

The Pyle Pro has bad reviews on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Electric-Guitar-String-Winder/dp/B01LEZLRNS
Ni-Cd batteries are used not Lithium.

The Flanger one is a Asian OEM product and comes under various brand names in different countries:
